The 82nd Venice International Film Festival's official selection for the institutional sector and the opening film of the 30th Busan International Film Festival, 'No Other Choice,' will see Son Ye-jin continue the lineage of charming female characters created by director Park Chan-wook.
'No Other Choice' depicts the story of 'Man-soo' (Lee Byung-hun), an office worker who felt satisfied enough to think he had 'achieved it all,' who is suddenly fired and prepares for his own war for reemployment while trying to protect his wife and two children and keep the house he worked hard to secure. Director Park Chan-wook, known for creating unforgettable female characters such as 'Mi-do' from 'Oldboy,' 'Geum-ja' from 'Lady Vengeance,' 'Tae-ju' from 'Thirst,' as well as 'Hideko,' a noble lady from 'The Handmaiden,' and 'Sook-hee,' a pickpocket orphan girl, has won the love of audiences.
In 'Decision to Leave,' the wife of the deceased, 'Seo-rae,' captivated audiences with her bold yet mysterious charm. Director Park Chan-wook, who has developed unprecedented female characters with unique settings in each of his works, will once again present a distinctive female character, 'Mi-ri' (Son Ye-jin), who becomes stronger in times of crisis in 'No Other Choice.'
Son Ye-jin has showcased a wide range of characters in various works, including the representative Korean melodramas 'A Moment to Remember' and 'The Classic,' as well as 'The Last Princess,' which tells the story of the last princess of the Korean Empire, 'Pirates: Hidden Fleet,' and 'No Secrets.' In the dramas 'Something in the Rain' and 'Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food,' she added depth to her characters with her graceful emotional expressions, proving both her popularity and acting skills through 'Crash Landing on You,' earning her warm love from audiences worldwide.
This time, she will breathe life into the character of 'Mi-ri,' who responds unwaveringly even in the face of the family's declining situation due to her husband 'Man-soo's' sudden job loss. Particularly, 'Mi-ri's' bright and strong demeanor, as she offers comfort to the frustrated 'Man-soo' and holds the family together, is richly completed with Son Ye-jin's unique charm.
Director Park Chan-wook noted, 'Mi-ri is strong-willed, has many hobbies, and is a person who speaks her mind. She is someone who prepares her own future while dealing with what her husband 'Man-soo' has done at a reasonable level.' This raises expectations for the lovable wife 'Mi-ri,' who has a clear sense of self.
'No Other Choice,' announcing the birth of another uniquely original female character created by director Park Chan-wook, is expected to offer distinct entertainment in theaters this September.
The meeting of trusted actors, dramatic developments, beautiful mise-en-scène, solid direction, and black comedy combined make director Park Chan-wook's new film 'No Other Choice' set to be released on September 24.
