'The Mantis: Original Sin' is the first drama by writer Lee Young-jong. He thought a lot about it, and he made every effort to achieve the best results.
The new SBS drama 'The Mantis: Original Sin' (directed by Byun Young-joo, written by Lee Young-jong, planned by Studio S, produced by Merry Christmas, Mega Monster, Film Production House Boim) airs for the first time on September 5 and is a high-density crime thriller that portrays the unexpected collaboration between a mother serial killer and her detective son. Ko Hyun-jung (as Jung Yi-shin) and Jang Dong-yoon (as Cha Soo-yeol) promise a groundbreaking transformation, being highlighted as the one genre drama that will captivate viewers this fall.
'The Mantis: Original Sin' is also anticipated as writer Lee Young-jong's first drama, which has already attracted an audience of 13.12 million with the film 'The Spring of Seoul'. Lee Young-jong has created numerous hits, taking charge of scripts for 'The Spring of Seoul' as well as 'The Black House', 'Shadow Murder', 'Cold', and adaptations for 'I Am a Murderer', 'Must Catch', 'Crime City 2', and 'Hunt'. Since this is writer Lee Young-jong's first drama, media and public interest in 'The Mantis: Original Sin' is also intense.
At this point, I directly asked writer Lee Young-jong about his story. I inquired how he came to write this work, what he paid attention to while writing, and what he thinks is the charm and message of this work.
First, writer Lee Young-jong explained about 'The Mantis: Original Sin', saying, "Superficially, it is a story about a mother and son struggling to catch a serial killer. More fundamentally, it is about how people understand and heal each other when they hate those closest to them, like family."
He continued, "Initially, I was recommended to watch the French original drama under the premise of whether it could be made into a film. I thought it would be difficult to develop it as a film, both conceptually and in terms of story length, but I found it very entertaining. Later, the current production company suggested that they wanted to make it into a drama this time, so I contemplated deeply and thought it was worth trying."
Since it is his first drama, writer Lee Young-jong faced 'The Mantis: Original Sin' with a somewhat special sensitivity. He stated, "Due to time constraints, films have to compress the story. So, I felt a burden in delving deeper into characters. Dramas, on the other hand, had comparatively fewer limitations. I was free and enjoyed it in handling the allure of characters and various aspects of their personalities. Furthermore, dramas seem to tend to focus more on character allure than incidents, so I concentrated a lot on that part," raising curiosity and expectations for the series.
Finally, writer Lee Young-jong said, "This work has powerful thrills and suspense. For those who enjoy the crime thriller genre, I am sure you will watch it with pleasure. However, 'The Mantis: Original Sin' is not just a work pursuing genre fun. You may find your heart warming while witnessing the communication and healing process of wounded people. It's both exhilarating and touching, but also a very entertaining story. Please give it a lot of love!" encouraging potential viewers to watch.
The first drama by writer Lee Young-jong, who captivated 13.12 million viewers with 'The Spring of Seoul'. Writer Lee Young-jong, who has created historically acclaimed works such as 'The Black House', 'Shadow Murder', and 'Cold', presents the drama 'The Mantis: Original Sin', which is more film-like than a film itself. I am curious and looking forward to the 'The Mantis: Original Sin', which will show unimaginable tension and message.
The new SBS drama 'The Mantis: Original Sin' will premiere on Friday, September 5, at 9:50 p.m.
