'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' has shown extraordinary results in the 4DX sensory experience theater, indicating a remarkable box office success.
On the 27th, according to CGV, 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' recorded over 90% seat occupancy in 4DX during its opening weekend. This level surpasses the historical record set by 'Avatar: The Way of Water' for opening weekends. The seat occupancy rates for IMAX and Dolby Atmos also approached 80%, showcasing significant box office performance in specialty theaters.
'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' spectacularly opened with the highest opening score of the year. It attracted 510,000 viewers on its first day of release on the 22nd and surpassed a cumulative audience of 2 million within five days.
Comments on the CGV mobile app included reactions such as, "Each action scene came alive in 4DX," and "The majestic scale and overwhelming sound of IMAX are unforgettable." There were also remarks like, "4DX sold out, so I watched it in a regular theater, but I want to see it again in 4DX," indicating anticipation for repeat viewings in specialty theaters.
This craze follows the success of 'F1® The Movie', which was released at the end of June, attracting 4.5 million viewers and leading the 4DX boom. With the addition of 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train', analysts suggest that another 4DX syndrome is emerging in theaters in 2025.
Benefiting from this box office success, merchandise has also sold out rapidly. From the release date, CGV nationwide introduced 'Character Metal Keyrings' featuring 12 characters, along with 'Reusable Cups & Mini Acrylic Keyrings' depicting Tanjiro and his group, and 'Character Folding Fans' showcasing all 12 characters. Most of the stock has already been exhausted over the weekend. This has been described as an expanded experience that goes beyond just watching the film, incorporating specialty theaters, merchandise, and collaboration cafes.
CJ CGV's Jo Jin-ho, head of domestic business, noted, "We are enhancing immersion in the works through specialty theaters and showcasing various merchandise and collaboration cafes, creating a new consumption culture in film where fandom culture and theater experience are combined," and added, "We will continue to provide programs that allow customers to enjoy the film's world in diverse ways."
