An Yujin, who is set to make a comeback with Ive, grants and had an honest conversation with Jung Jae-hyung about the challenges and growth she faces as a singer.
That day, Jung Jae-hyung warmly welcomed An Yujin, whom he hadn't seen in a long time. He opened the conversation by saying, 'You were doing very well and looked very pretty back when I met you during the IZ*ONE activities.'
An Yujin talked about her past self, saying, 'Looking back, I really looked like a baby. Honestly, I can't see it well. I guess I haven't grown enough to find it cute. I think it's an age where I wonder, 'Why would she say that?'' I was also quite bubbly and wanted to talk a lot. So sometimes when an old video pops up, I quickly skip it. I'm so embarrassed.'
An Yujin also mentioned her preferences. Jung Jae-hyung said, 'At your age, you're building your tastes. You start to like things, want to do things, and think your agency is pretty crummy,' which made them both laugh.
An Yujin mentioned, 'The reason I wanted to be here is that I truly envy people with clear tastes. The kind of people who have a manual saying, 'If I want to do this, I should go here, and if I want to buy this, I should go to that place.' I envied my seniors who said, 'I like this item, and it would be great to buy it here.'
An Yujin also discussed her debut and vocal skills. She stated, 'When I was a trainee, I thought that if I sang well and danced well, I could do everything. But there are a lot of things beyond that, like having an image.' She added, 'I'm someone who tends to get nervous. I'm less so now than before, but when I was a trainee, my hands would tremble while singing. Since I never formally studied singing or dancing before joining the agency, I learned it in a hurry. So during the monthly evaluations, I was trembling and would hit wrong notes, and it was just a mess.'
An Yujin revealed, 'So the company said, 'We don't expect much from Yujin's vocals.' I was a bit shocked when I heard that. I thought I was doing pretty well for someone who learned quickly.' She shared, 'After Ive debuted, a person who had told me that said I sing really well, and I felt proud.'
Jung Jae-hyung also asked An Yujin about her cover of 'Golden' from the Netflix animation 'K-Pop Demon Hunters,' which had garnered attention. An Yujin said, 'Dancing well is very cool, but I think singing well is truly impressive.' Jung Jae-hyung praised her, saying, 'You did well on 'Golden.' To which An Yujin responded, 'Really? I'm still far from it,' bringing laughter.
Jung Jae-hyung mentioned that he saw An Yujin confidently handle a sound incident during Ive's Lollapalooza performance, saying, 'I saw you really trembling during the Lollapalooza performance. I was impressed by your calm response.'
In response, An Yujin said, 'I really didn't know. I found out later when the video was uploaded. I thought I handled it calmly. The emotion at that time was that there was a section in the performance that was very difficult for me. The opening is the hardest for me. Since that is at the beginning, I couldn't gauge the crowd's atmosphere, plus there's the pressure of singing a difficult song. I was trying my best, thinking, 'There's no way the mic wouldn't work at this big festival.'
An Yujin said, 'But later, I found out it didn't work. I actually don't speak English very fluently, and I tend to get nervous when I do. At that time, I thought, 'I have to do this,' and 'Rather than being nervous, I need to fix this quickly.' Jung Jae-hyung praised An Yujin for her poised response even in a tense and confusing moment.
An Yujin also revealed her true thoughts as the leader of Ive. She shared, 'At first, I felt a bit good. I thought, 'I want to try being in a position like this at least once.' Now it has been three years. In the past, I had an image of a leader being someone who scolds others, and honestly, I thought I had to take on that role initially. I thought I had to guide the team correctly and point out if someone is wrong. But looking back, I realized each person has their own standards, and I don't need to think that much.'
