The father of 'golden child' Ggumjok was moved by Dr. Oh Eun-young's statement that "he has Tourette syndrome."
In the episode aired on the 22nd of Channel A's 'Recent Parenting - Golden Child', the story of "parents who disappear every night and seven cursing siblings" was unveiled while a couple appeared in the studio.
The couple revealed that the fifth child among the seven siblings is Ggumjok and shared their worries about him cursing. In the ensuing video, Ggumjok began to curse after teasing his younger sibling, who rebelled against him. Ggumjok, who shouted "s***", ignored his brother's warning and seemed to pay no heed even to his mother's discipline. The more he scolded him, the more Ggumjok responded with curses. At this, Shin Ae-ra asked, "Since when did this start?"
The mother replied, "It started in kindergarten. And it got worse after giving birth to the sixth child." The father added, "What's funny is that when there are strangers, he becomes very nice. The teachers say it too and asked if he is really a kind student at school."
At this, Dr. Oh Eun-young analyzed, "Ggumjok's problem is that he curses a lot. Cursing is closely related to language development. He should express his emotions using various languages, but if he doesn't acquire them diversely, he will curse even when it's raining or when he's hungry. He will express all emotions in cursing as well in everyday situations."
Ggumjok also began to curse while watching TV and exhibited some incomprehensible behaviors, even responding to his grandmother's instruction to "be quiet" with curses.
Dr. Oh Eun-young stated, "Ggumjok has Tourette's syndrome." He explained, "It is much more chronic than tic disorders," and noted, "Without his knowledge, his muscles contract, and he jerks his shoulders and turns his head."
Regarding the cursing behavior, he said, "It's called vocal tic, and the sudden outburst of curse words also falls under tic. I think it should be regarded as a Tourette symptom," adding, "It's not about correcting habits or routines, but something that occurs at a certain moment, regardless of will. Imagine how distressed he must feel."
Meanwhile, Ggumjok shocked everyone by repeatedly making lewd comments, saying, "It's girls kissing" while looking at a smartphone. However, what Ggumjok was watching was just a game, which made the panelists puzzled due to the unrelated remarks.
Dr. Oh Eun-young stated, "Now that I understand this properly, I feel pity for him," adding, "The cursing or lewd expressions this child makes are referred to as echolalia." Echolalia refers to the sudden outburst of sexual and obscene remarks characteristic of Tourette syndrome. Upon hearing this, the father, seeming incredulous, said, "That's not possible. We see the child more often," and he was moved to tears.
The couple with the 'seven siblings' who appeared in the studio shared their worries about Ggumjok's cursing. However, it turned out that not only Ggumjok but also the second and third siblings were cursing.
Meanwhile, not only Ggumjok but also the second and third siblings, including a 3-year-old who is still in diapers, shocked everyone by cursing "s***". Dr. Oh Eun-young remarked, "It started with the fifth child, Ggumjok, and while looking at various reasons, I found that there's a bigger issue at play. In this household, cursing has become a norm."
He continued, "With many children in a big family, there should be harmony, but there's no interaction. The words exchanged among the children are commands and accusatory curses. Ultimately, the children respond to everything with curses. There are no other words apart from that." The father reflected, "I used to just tell the kids not to say those words and let it go." However, Dr. Oh Eun-young pointed out, "I believe this indicates a significant lack of care."
