'Let's Go to the Moon' production team removed a teaser video for an ice cream advertisement concept after being criticized for caricaturing Middle Eastern culture and issued an apology.
On the 21st, the production team of MBC's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Let's Go to the Moon' expressed its official stance on the deletion of the teaser video that was previously released to OSEN.
In this regard, a representative of the project explained, "The teaser for 'Let's Go to the Moon' was created by parodying famous ice cream commercials from the 1980s to 1990s, based on the fact that the story of the drama is set against the backdrop of a confectionery company."
Furthermore, they apologized, stating, "There were aspects where we did not consider the perspectives of other cultures during this process. We have now deleted the video entirely. Going forward, we will pay more attention and be more cautious to ensure there are no discomforts like this in the future."
Earlier, the production team of 'Let's Go to the Moon' posted a teaser video inspired by ice cream advertisement videos of famous confectionery companies that gained popularity in the 1980s and 90s. The teaser, featuring lead actors Ra Mi-ran and Lee Sun-bin in costumes reminiscent of the Middle East, sparked criticism from some overseas internet users for caricaturing a specific regional culture.
'Let's Go to the Moon' is a drama depicting the hyper-realistic survival story of three women who cannot survive on just their salary and dive into coin investment. It features Ra Mi-ran, Lee Sun-bin, Jo Ah-ram, and Kim Young-dae, garnering expectations. The first broadcast is on Friday, Sept. 19, at 9:50 p.m.
