CORTIS, the 'Big Hit Music rookie,' unveiled a music video armed with innovative ideas.
The members of CORTIS, consisting of Martin, James, Juhun, Seonghyeon, and Gunho, posted the music video for their debut album 'COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES' titled 'What You Want' on HYBE Labels' YouTube channel at midnight on the 20th. Unlike the conceptual performance film released on the 18th, this video unfolds around a narrative.
In the music video, the members traverse the boundaries between dreams and reality endlessly. In the beginning of the video, they are stranded in a hot desert due to a car breakdown. Soon, the scene shifts to them dozing in a restaurant, hinting that the previous scene was a dream. Just as they think they have returned to reality, ingredients start flying around in the restaurant, and juice sprays out instead of gas at the gas station. Each transition from the desert to the restaurant, subway, or gas station feels like waking from a dream, but a closer look reveals it to be yet another dream. The surreal events occurring in extremely mundane settings provide unpredictable entertainment. Furthermore, the exaggerated angles, rhythmic editing, and the members' dramatic reactions make it seem like watching a black comedy film.
The five members are credited as co-directors of the music video. Their unique compositions and witty scenario setups showcase the fresh ideas of teenagers. Notably, the interpretation of the song's message, 'I will not hesitate to obtain what I truly want,' as a dual-meaning 'dream' has also been highlighted as a key theme in the video. In this manner, CORTIS demonstrated their capabilities as a 'young creator crew' by co-creating not only the music and choreography of the title track but also the music video.
CORTIS debuted by releasing the audio for the title track 'What You Want' at 6 p.m. on the 18th. The song entered the 'Top Songs' chart rankings of iTunes in 15 countries/regions, including Thailand, Indonesia, and the Netherlands, by 6 a.m. on the 20th, marking the start of a global hit. The five members will kick off their music broadcast activities starting with Mnet's 'M Countdown' on the 21st. After making an impression with a fresh treadmill performance, they will officially release their debut album 'COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES' on September 8.
