In 1963, Jeon Joong-yun, chairman of Samyang Foods, presented the first ramen in Korea. Chairman Jeon realized the seriousness of the food issue after seeing people lining up to eat 'guk-guk-yi porridge' and decided to make ramen himself after tasting it on a business trip to Japan. The story of ramen development, which nearly failed to acquire the core technology in Japan, was revealed. Additionally, the behind-the-scenes story of the creation of the spicy chicken ramen, which was born from the idea of Vice Chairwoman Kim Jeong-soo, daughter-in-law of Chairman Jeon, and recently recorded the top spot in ramen exports, was also uncovered.
Meanwhile, Nongshim's Chairman Shin Chun-ho, who entered the ramen market in earnest, caused a paradigm shift in the industry. At the time, since ramen broth was mainly chicken-based, a beef broth ramen was developed reflecting the public's wishes. Furthermore, the background that led Chairman Shin to create the legendary ramen advertisement that resonates even today across generations was also revealed. MC Lee Kyung-kyu, who shot ramen commercials at one time, boasted, "(It was so popular at the time) that there was no flour in the factory, so we couldn't produce ramen!"
To break the duopoly of Samyang and Nongshim, the dark horse OTOKI emerged. Although OTOKI captured the taste buds of the world with ramen featuring BTS's Jin as a model, consumer reactions were not favorable when it entered as a latecomer. Nevertheless, Chairman Ham Tae-ho, who did not give up, had a secret to revitalize the business by improving the flavor and texture of the noodles.
