'Kedheon' director revealed a strong bond with his hometown Korea despite leaving it in his childhood.
On the afternoon of the 20th, Arirang TV conducted a live broadcast of 'K-Pop: The Next Chapter' with President Lee Jae-myung. Under the guidance of MC Jang Seong-kyu, President Lee Jae-myung, Netflix film 'K-Pop: Demon Hunters' (abbreviated 'Kedheon') director Megi Kang, and TWICE's Jeongyeon and Jihyo attended to discuss 'Kedheon' and the popularity of K-pop.
Director Megi Kang commented on the Korean details of 'Kedheon,' saying, "Things like bathhouses seem strange to others, but that's not the case. In Iceland, there are many outdoor spas. Therefore, I think this is understood as a Korean-style outdoor spa."
He also emphasized the Korean consolidation. He stated, "My family went to Toronto when I was 5 years old. We thought we would continue to return to Korea, so we spent every summer in Korea. I think that strong consolidation contributed to the historical accuracy (of the film)."
Furthermore, director Megi Kang noted, "It seems that Netflix and Sony were looking for such films," referring to the interest from Netflix and production company Sony Pictures in 'Kedheon.'
He mentioned, "My partner, Chris Appelhans, previously worked on the film 'Wish Dragon,' which encapsulated Chinese culture and did well. After that, he asked me if there are such stories in Korea. I said, of course, there are. I could explain it even more easily through Korean culture. I have a strong pride in being Korean, so I wanted to make this kind of film," he said with a smile.
'Kedheon' is an action fantasy animation film depicting the story of the K-pop superstar girl group Huntress fighting evil spirits behind their glamorous stage. It was released on Netflix on June 20 and ranked 2nd among all-time Netflix films. Additionally, the OST 'Golden' has reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, causing a sensation.
