Professor Lee Gye-ho, who caused controversy by saying on the entertainment show "You Quiz on the Block" that "drinking 2 liters of water a day can harm health," has made a clarification.
On the 19th, a video titled "I will summarize all the medical information from You Quiz" was uploaded to the YouTube channel "Jung Hee-won's Slow Aging." In the video, Professor Lee explained, "I did not mean not to drink a lot of water, but rather to drink in moderation according to one's needs."
He noted, "There are people who obsess over the figure of 2 liters and drink forcefully. On days when you eat a lot of watermelon, there is no need to drink an additional 2 liters of water. Food also provides enough moisture," and added, "When exercising or in hot weather, there are times when more than 2 liters should be drunk." He also advised, "Drink when you are thirsty, but if the urine color is too dark, drink, and do not force yourself to drink until it is clear."
Earlier, in an episode of tvN's "You Quiz" aired on the 6th, Professor Lee shocked MC Yoo Jae-seok and Cho Sae-ho by stating, "Drinking exactly 2 liters of water can harm health." At that time, he claimed, "Drinking too much water can dilute sodium levels, leading to hyponatremia. If you also adopt an extreme low-sodium diet, it can lead to heart failure," causing an uproar. Immediately after the broadcast, there was a heated debate online about daily water intake.
As the controversy grew, Jung Hee-won, the Director of Health at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, expressed concern, saying, "The remarks lack scientific evidence or are exaggerated," and invited Professor Kim Se-jung from Bundang Seoul National University Hospital's nephrology department for a related live broadcast. Subsequently, Professor Lee directly contacted the Director, stating that "the remarks were condensed and conveyed differently than intended" and expressed willingness to appear on YouTube, leading to this meeting.
In the video, Professor Lee stated, "I fully agree with the explanations of Director Jung and Professor Kim," and clarified that "the key points were condensed in the editing process, leading to misunderstandings." Director Jung also emphasized, "This is not aimed at targeting a specific individual, but rather correcting exaggerated information to prevent unnecessary fear."
