Today (19th), the webtoon and novel IP production company Jaedam Media announced that it has signed a contract for the drama adaptation of 'The losing side is the first lady', which is serialized every Thursday on Naver Webtoon, in collaboration with the film and drama production company KROSS Pictures. This work has been recognized early on for its potential to captivate global viewers with its unique and intense logline.
'The losing side is the first lady' tells the story of the married couple, lawmakers Gwak Hyun-woo (conservative) and Jo Jae-ryeong (progressive). The two, who have extremely different political inclinations and lifestyles, are the closest yet farthest couple in the world. However, due to a massive bribery scandal that erupted ahead of the 21st presidential election, they stand before the public not as husband and wife, but as 'competing presidential candidates.' Amid the life-and-death struggle to become 'the losing side is the first lady,' sharp political confrontations, intertwined truths, and conflicts and romance between the couple unfold, promising a new genre of drama that deviates from conventional political dramas.
This work, which skillfully combines politics and romance, contains a narrative that anyone, both domestic and international viewers, can relate to through the universal themes of marital relationships and power struggles. In particular, the setting of 'the losing side is the first lady' is intuitively understandable across languages and is garnering attention for its storyline that can leave a strong impression on global platforms.
The drama production company KROSS Pictures, in charge of this drama, has successfully produced popular dramas based on webtoons, such as 'Office Romance' and 'Voice of the Heart', showcasing strengths in direction that faithfully captures the charm of the original work and project planning that reflects global trends. Notably, 'Knuckle Girl', based on a webtoon, which they signed with Jaedam Media, was produced as a film in Japan and was simultaneously released in over 240 countries worldwide through the global OTT platform Amazon Prime Video, proving its competitiveness in overseas markets.
'The losing side is the first lady' will also be produced not only in Korea but also in overseas countries such as the United States, India, and Japan, based on its global production know-how. The writer Choi Yoo-jin, who is in charge of the script, has been praised for her narrative with a vivid emotional line and delicate character portrayal, building a solid fan base through works such as 'Lady Crow' and 'I want to go bankrupt, not marry'. The illustrator Kang Ji-young has gained attention for her unique visual style and immersive direction, crossing various genres, such as 'Kingsmaker' and 'Oh, My God!'.
