Director Park Chan-wook of 'No Other Choice' clarified his position regarding reports of his removal from the Writers Guild of America.
On the morning of the 19th, a production briefing for the film 'No Other Choice' was held at the CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul. Attendees included Director Park Chan-wook, leading actors Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeo Hyun-ran, and Cha Seung-won.
'No Other Choice' (Director Park Chan-wook, distributed by CJ ENM, produced by Moho Film and CJ ENM Studios) depicts the story of a company employee, Man-soo (played by Lee Byung-hun), who felt that he had achieved everything in life but faced sudden unemployment. To protect his wife (played by Son Ye-jin) and their two children, and to retain the house he worked hard to acquire, he prepares for his own battle toward reemployment. It was invited to the competition section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and selected as the opening film for the 30th Busan International Film Festival, as well as officially invited to the 50th Toronto International Film Festival and the 63rd New York Film Festival, garnering global attention.
Previously, foreign media outlets including Variety reported that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) confirmed the expulsion of Director Park Chan-wook, who participated in writing the HBO miniseries 'The Sympathizer', and Canadian actor-director Don McKellar. According to the guild, the two were deemed to have violated strike rules by continuing to work on the script during the 2023 WGA strike. Park Chan-wook and McKellar did not appeal the expulsion decision.
When related questions were raised that day, Director Park Chan-wook said, "I have no further comments regarding my expulsion from the Writers Guild," adding, "There have been many reports lately, so there is nothing more to add."
Additionally, Director Park Chan-wook responded, "There will be no restrictions or limitations on my activities as a writer."
Meanwhile, 'No Other Choice' is set to be released this September.
