Actor Yang Kyung-won revealed the past of 'Tae-oh,' which was hidden behind his cheerful face, adding depth to the character's narrative.
Yang Kyung-won unveiled Tae-oh's hidden past for the first time in episode 5 of the tvN Monday-Tuesday drama 'For First Love' (directed by Yoo Jae-won, written by Seong Woo-jin, planned and produced by Studio Dragon and Showrunners), which aired on the 18th, convincingly portraying the character's complex inner self through detailed emotional acting.
In the past, 'Tae-oh' was once a promising baseball player, but he had to quit due to injuries from a motorcycle accident. Subsequently, he lost the center of his life, and through a process of succumbing to alcoholism, his relationships with his family also deteriorated, leading to deep fractures both externally and internally.
The broadcast recalled a scene of heightened conflict with his mother from the past. Tae-oh's act of throwing objects in front of his mother due to being unable to control his emotions revealed the emotional rupture of that tumultuous time. This scene served as a backdrop that shaped the character's current personality and emotional lines, transcending a mere past event.
Yang Kyung-won portrayed a character entangled in such complex emotions persuasively through restrained emotional acting. By densely depicting the pain, guilt, and regret hidden behind a cheerful expression and a playful tone, he added depth to the character of 'Tae-oh.'
Especially towards the end of the broadcast, after the narration by Bo-hyun (played by Kim Min-kyu), 'Did we hate our mom, or did we miss her?' the scene of Tae-oh shedding tears in the darkness left a greater lingering effect than any dialogue. It vividly conveyed the character's wounds and lacks, enhancing viewer immersion.
Yang Kyung-won has consistently delivered stable performances of characters navigating the extremes of reality and emotions in various works. In this piece, through the character of 'Tae-oh,' he delicately uncovers the nuances of emotions and narrative threads, adding depth to the character.
'For First Love' airs every Monday and Tuesday at 8:50 p.m.
