Actress Lee Young-ae, who will lead 'Walking On Thin Ice,' shared her reasons for choosing the work and her special affection for the character.
The new KBS 2TV Saturday-Sunday miniseries 'Walking On Thin Ice' (directed by Song Hyun-wook / written by Jeon Young-shin / produced by Baram Pictures, Slingshot Studio), which is scheduled to premiere on September 20, portrays the desperate partnership formed through a bag of drugs that a parent, Kang Eun-soo, who wants to protect her family, and Lee Kyung, a teacher with two faces, accidentally acquire. 'Walking On Thin Ice' is expected to be a well-made work created by the collaboration of director Song Hyun-wook, who perfectly handles a diverse range of genres from romance to thriller and action, and writer Jeon Young-shin, who combines a dense narrative with realism.
Lee Young-ae plays the role of Kang Eun-soo, a typical housewife who jumps into the world of taboos. To protect her family, she steps into drug sales and will convey a realistic empathy and strong immersion through Eun-soo's desperate journey as she gradually transforms.
Lee Young-ae recalled the day she first encountered the script for 'Walking On Thin Ice,' saying, "Kang Eun-soo is an ordinary mom and wife connected to reality, but she transforms into a character that gradually transcends her essence." She added, "At first, I thought I could comfortably act like 'Lee Young-ae,' but the process of transforming into a character that transcends her essence was very interesting."
She also shared the background of her return to KBS drama after 26 years since 'Invitation,' saying, "I chose it because I liked the power and message of the work. I hope 'Walking On Thin Ice' will be a new starting point for not only KBS dramas but also for me." She noted, "While filming, I felt various inspirations and synergy, which led me to resolve to work harder."
Kang Eun-soo, played by Lee Young-ae, is an ordinary citizen living diligently, but she becomes embroiled in an uncontrollable whirlwind due to actions born from a small desire. She explained, "Eun-soo has a great deficiency regarding her family and a strong will to protect them. Since she has an ordinary dream of finding love and happiness within her home, the transformation process is convincing." She added, "At first, I was worried that the drug theme might be too heavy or make society seem darker. However, I had trust in director Song Hyun-wook, who unfolds the work in an engaging way without heaviness, and I believe 'Walking On Thin Ice' will provide an opportunity to address social messages."
Initially, Eun-soo in the work appears as a simple 'mom,' but as the events unfold, her changing emotions are revealed. Lee Young-ae said, "In the middle, there are many chase and action scenes, so I managed my physical strength with strength training and a treadmill," adding, "There is a scene where the previously calm emotions of Eun-soo explode, and I hope viewers can feel catharsis through it."
Lee Young-ae also expressed her limitless trust in the actors she collaborated with, saying, "I was happy to work with actors I usually admire in this piece." She noted, "Actor Kim Young-kwang brought energy and spontaneity, providing synergy. Actor Park Yong-woo's serious attitude toward acting made me reflect on myself."
Identifying 'hope' as the representative keyword that expresses the character of Kang Eun-soo, Lee Young-ae stated, "Eun-soo initially leads a peaceful life like the color blue, but as the story unfolds, she becomes a character that turns gray." She added, "While she may be both a perpetrator and a victim, I hope to give viewers a small hope until the end," eagerly anticipating the moment she will meet viewers this fall.
