MBC "Mary Kills People" performer Lee Bo-young is at the center of a shocking twist, being the suspect in her mother's murder while battling cancer, which has shaken the home theater with a groundbreaking "confession".
In the 5th episode of MBC's Friday-Saturday drama "Mary Kills People" (planned by Kwon Seong-chang, directed by Park Jun-woo, written by Lee Soo-ah), which aired on the 16th, the hidden past of Woo So-jung (played by Lee Bo-young) is revealed, as the complicated emotions of Banjihun (played by Lee Min-ki) and the threats from Koo Kwang-cheol (played by Baek Hyun-jin) escalate, leading to the forced drugging and police investigation of Choi Dae-hyun (played by Kang Ki-young), creating a surge of tension.
In the series, Woo So-jung, who had become a hostage herself, was stabbed in the abdomen after attempting to escape when Koo Kwang-cheol shot and killed Kim Si-hyun (played by Oh Ui-sik). Banjihun found Woo So-jung lying in a pool of blood, but upon her protest "I was threatened," he cut her off, saying, "We'll make that judgment after the investigation." Banjihun confronted Woo So-jung, who was lying in the emergency room, about why Kim Si-hyun, who had taken a hostage, wasn't caught on CCTV, but Woo So-jung replied, "I want to hold the police accountable for not controlling the suspect trying to escape," resulting in a fiery confrontation with Banjihun and Detective Boo (played by Tae Hang-ho).
At the same time, Choi Dae-hyun, hearing that Woo So-jung had been kidnapped and released, visited Koo Kwang-cheol, who furiously claimed that the reason Kim Si-hyun was caught by the police was due to Woo So-jung and Choi Dae-hyun, and that he was also in danger. However, when Choi Dae-hyun explained that while it was illegal now, it could become a matter of choice over time, possibly becoming a human right, Koo Kwang-cheol sparkled with interest, describing it as "a perfectly fresh business idea," and forced Choi Dae-hyun to drink drugged champagne.
At that moment, Choi Dae-hyun, under the influence of the drug, was unable to answer the phone, while Woo So-jung headed to the welfare hospital at the request of Elder Yang (played by Kwon Hae-hyo), with Banjihun accompanying her to keep watch. When Woo So-jung saw Lee Yun-hee (played by Yang Jo-ah), who was writhing in extreme pain and screaming, suddenly showing more intense convulsions due to delirium, she asked Banjihun for help. Eventually, Woo So-jung shed tears, and Banjihun looked at Lee Yun-hee with a changed expression, as Woo So-jung expressed her sincerity.
Then, Banjihun revealed to Elder Yang that he was a detective and expressed his concern about the reason for pursuing Woo So-jung, stating, "Regardless of the intent, it's something that shouldn't be done." Elder Yang admonished Woo So-jung, saying, "Life and death are realms of the divine," but Woo So-jung replied, "If the only treatment I can offer a patient who has nothing left but pain is death, then I want to provide that treatment," and expressed her firm resolve, stating, "I am no longer Maria."
Meanwhile, Choi Dae-hyun, who was being investigated based on past drug charges, requested a lawyer upon hearing that he had tested positive for drugs. At that moment, Ryu Yi-soo (played by Seo Young-hee), who knew Woo So-jung and her niece Jae-yeon (played by Kim Sang-ji), appeared and made Choi Dae-hyun enraged by relaying the police's words that helping catch Woo So-jung would reduce the sentencing for the murder charges.
Afterward, upon hearing from Elder Yang about Lee Yun-hee's death and her daughter's placement in an orphanage, Woo So-jung was devastated. However, she was surprised to receive news that her niece Jae-yeon had gone missing from school. Grateful to Banjihun for helping her find Jae-yeon, at that moment, Banjihun, saddened by the news of Lee Yun-hee's passing, shared his real phone number and name with Woo So-jung, while also expressing, "I will definitely catch you. You are ruining yourself trying to save someone else," which made Woo So-jung turn away, suppressing her shaken emotions. Afterward, Woo So-jung realized that the daughter of Lee Yun-hee, who would have gone to the orphanage, was lied to about Lee Yun-hee's death by Elder Yang, leading to her eruption of anger, saying to Elder Yang, "Living a compliant life is beautiful too" and "You are irresponsible, just like before."
Eventually, Woo So-jung resolved to let Lee Yun-hee, who was suffering in pain, go after talking to her daughter, and called Koo Kwang-cheol to say, "She is suffering too much," requesting medication. However, Koo Kwang-cheol ominously told her to proceed in front of him, seemingly trying to seek new business opportunities.
Meanwhile, the ending of the 5th episode revealed the shocking hidden past of Woo So-jung. Her original name was Woo Chae-young, and she was a prime suspect in the murder case of her mother who was battling cancer. Woo So-jung's mother, who drowned in a lake near their home, was found with her hands tied behind her back, yet young Woo So-jung, being interrogated at the time, calmly stated, "She committed suicide. My mother always wanted to die. I tried to save her," raising suspicion.
