The special KBS1 documentary series 'World 1945' (planned by Son Jong-ho, executive producer Lee Gi-yeon, producer Kim Jong-seok, directed by Jung Beom-soo, Park Nam-yong, Kim Do-won, Kim Sang-beom) will air its second episode 'Journey of Death, Nuclear' at 9:30 p.m. on the 17th, exploring the first creation of the absolute weapon nuclear bomb endowed with divine power.
In 1945, although Germany was defeated in World War II, fierce battles continued against Japan in the Pacific. Amid the ongoing war, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the first four-term president of the United States, died of a cerebral hemorrhage, and Vice President Harry S. Truman succeeded to the presidency.
With no warning, Truman, who became president, received a report called 'the weapon of God'. Until then, Truman had been unaware of the Manhattan Project, a nuclear bomb development project that mobilized 600,000 people over three years. On the first day of the Potsdam Conference, held to discuss the ongoing war with Japan, which had not yet surrendered, Truman received word that a nuclear test had been successful. The power of the nuclear bomb exceeded expectations, with flashes visible from a distance of 400 km.
An immense card was given to the 'beginner president,' and Truman informed Churchill, who had been involved in the nuclear tests, about the success of the bomb development. He then told Stalin, 'We have developed a very powerful new weapon.' However, Stalin did not even blink and showed little interest. The reason was that the Soviet Union had known about the Manhattan Project before Truman became president.
