Actor and theater director late Baek Won-gil passed away 12 years ago.
Late Baek Won-gil was found dead on Aug. 16, 2013, near the upper stream of the Namdaecheon River in Seomyeon, Yangyang County, Gangwon Province. He was 42 years old.
A search began after a report from a junior colleague about his disappearance after he left home the previous day, and he was discovered in the water of a stream not far from his residence. At that time, police presumed Baek Won-gil entered the water to place fishing traps and was swept away by the current.
Until shortly before his death, he had settled in Yangyang, living alone and enjoying fishing, and he shared posts on social media like, "I need to go to Yangyang to rest," and, "I caught worms for night fishing but got tired and just lay down," which deepened fans' sorrow.
Baek Won-gil, who debuted in the 2002 film "The Return of the Matchstick Girl," showcased powerful performances across both screens in movies like "Busan," "The Yellow Sea," "Suspicious Neighbors," and "If I Confess," as well as on television in MBC's "Midnight Hospital," "Mushin," and KBS2's "Dream High," along with drama specials such as Sirius. He also shone on the theater and musical stages by directing productions like "Jump" and "Break Out," gaining recognition for his stage sense.
In response to the sudden news, fellow actor Yoo Yeon-seok noted, "I hope you always smile in a good place," while Park Jung-min expressed, "I respected you. I will follow your energy," conveying their condolences.
The numerous stages and performances left by Baek Won-gil continue to live on in the memories of many.
