The British rock band Oasis has posted a video containing images reminiscent of the Rising Sun Flag on its official social media, provoking fierce backlash from Korean internet users.
Oasis released a new visualizer video for its hit song 'Morning Glory' on its official social media on the 8th (local time). The problem is that the yellow sun and radiating ray design appearing throughout the video reminds viewers of the Rising Sun Flag, a symbol of Japanese imperialism.
In particular, the relevant images in the video were repeatedly inserted into various scenes, including buildings, natural landscapes, and graphic backgrounds. Domestic and international internet users reacted by leaving critical comments such as "Seriously? Rising Sun Flag??", "You should study history before your Asia tour," and "Don't you have respect while wanting to make money in Korea?" Some fans expressed disappointment, mentioning the upcoming performance in Korea scheduled for October, saying, "Using such images before coming to Korea is reckless."
The Rising Sun Flag is a flag symbolizing Japanese imperialist militarism from the past, used during World War II as a symbol of invasion and colonial rule. In victim countries such as Korea and China, it is recognized as a war crime flag and carries sensitive historical significance.
Currently, Oasis has not issued an official statement or explanation regarding the video. However, among Korean fans, calls for the video to be deleted and for an apology are growing, drawing attention to how they will respond in the future.
Earlier, Oasis member Liam Gallagher stirred controversy over a racist comment by posting 'ChingChong' on his social media last month. As the criticism intensified, he clarified, saying, "It was not posted intentionally; I'm sorry if I upset anyone. I love you all and do not discriminate. I spread peace and love." Meanwhile, Oasis is set to hold a 30th-anniversary tour concert in Korea this October.
