The Defects has reached its grand finale.
In the final episode aired on Tuesday, Dec. 12, of the ENA drama The Defects (directed by Oh Gi-hwan, written by Ahn So-jung), the tragic end of Kim Se-hee (played by Yum Jung-ah), who ultimately broke down in front of her daughter Kim Ah-hyun (played by Won Jina), was depicted.
Se-hee executed a recall project that forced the subjects of The Defects to directly eliminate their adopted children, generating extreme tension. She shocked parents who felt guilty about the refund by declaring, "Of course, I will join. I will be killing my child today as well."
At that moment, Se-hee's other daughter Ah-hyun (played by Kim Ji-an) went to see the first lady (played by Han Soo-yeon) and revealed that Se-hee had been deceiving the presidential couple. The first lady was horrified by the shocking truth that Se-hee had been using the president's genes to create a child, and all of Se-hee's misdeeds were brought to light, drawing attention to future developments.
Meanwhile, Ah-hyun, Woo Tae-sik (played by Choi Young-jun), Joo-an (played by Ahn Ji-ho), and So-mi (played by Lee Na-eun) infiltrated Se-hee's campsite but were soon discovered by the organization members, including Jeong-hyun (played by Kim Jin-young). The desperate struggle of the children and Tae-sik for revenge on the massive stage prepared by Se-hee had the viewers on the edge of their seats.
With the children's arrival, the recall project scene became a chaotic mess in no time. Seeing Tae-sik and the children being overpowered, Ah-hyun ultimately kneeled before Se-hee, but at that moment, the police stormed the campsite, turning the situation around.
Surrounded by the police in an instant, Se-hee asked the police chief and the first lady for help, but both chose to abandon her. Jeong-hyun, knowing that she would ultimately be abandoned, nevertheless protected Se-hee until the end, and after saving her, breathed her last beside Ah-hyun.
In the closing moments of the broadcast, Se-hee, having lost everything, did not give up her desire to create the "perfect child" until the very end. Ah-hyun, who appeared before her while she was gathering culture solution in the laboratory, said, "Do you think that's perfect? If I had known you were just this kind of human, I would have missed you less. I'd rather hate you and have anger instead." She continued, "You lost. I love you, Mom," and left after putting down the gun, while Se-hee crumbled with a desolate expression. After the tragic conclusion of the mother-daughter duo, the children were depicted returning to their ordinary lives, leaving a deep aftertaste.
With its sensational setting of an illegal adoption cartel and a relentless pace of development, along with the immersive performances of actors such as Yum Jung-ah, Won Jina, Choi Young-jun, and Kim Jin-young, The Defects has garnered praise for showcasing the essence of a "high-quality action thriller" and has established itself as a work that will remain in the viewers' memories for a long time.
