Actor Koo Seong-hwan explained the unexpected landlord controversy.
Having debuted in 2004 with the movie 'Lower Life,' Koo gained attention last year as the down-to-earth and life-enjoying 'Mr. Gu' on the MBC entertainment program 'Home Alone.'
Living in a rooftop villa in Gangdong District, Seoul, he provides laughter and touching moments with his generous three meals a day and his comical habit of applying sunscreen liberally to his face to avoid the whitening phenomenon, while enjoying leisurely holidays with his pet dog Kkot-bun.
Koo attracted attention by confessing to water damage caused by heavy rain on the 8th, aired on 'Home Alone.' In particular, he revealed parts of the roof leakage, showing how he personally conducted waterproofing and wallpapering on the rooftop.
When Park Na-rae said, 'You should call a company', Koo responded, 'I did it last year but was scammed. The two brothers specifically told me, 'We will definitely catch it. We've never failed at this and will fix it until it stops.' We even signed a contract, but they did it twice and then stopped. They ghosted me.'
However, following the broadcast, there was curiosity from internet users about why Koo was doing the wallpapering and waterproofing directly without informing the landlord, and eventually Koo set out to explain himself.
On the 12th, he posted a video titled 'After the broadcast, many people sent me DMs asking why I am doing the roofing work without the landlord?! I will explain everything. This is my first and last response.' to his YouTube channel.
He stated, 'About three days have passed since the broadcast of 'Home Alone,' and many people have asked me through Instagram DMs and YouTube comments. They ask why I'm doing the roofing epoxy instead of the landlord and why I'm not having the landlord do the wallpapering. Questions continue about the landlord, property owner, and how many buildings he owns, so I won't talk about this anymore in this video.'
Regarding the villa building he lives in, Koo explained, 'The part in this building is indeed my father's building. And I will receive a gift of the other side around 2021 or 2022. Of course, I paid the gift tax. However, it's awkward to go on broadcast and talk about my past and personal life, so I avoided it, not realizing it would escalate like this.'
He also added details about his father's health condition and the background of the gift, saying, 'My father is a national merit holder, and he received gamma treatment for his brain. While undergoing brain treatment, he suddenly had some aftereffects and developed dementia. Thus, my father's part of the multi-family building he gifted to me is a fact,' saying that he had to take over the building maintenance tasks like roof management due to the health decline.
Koo firmly denied allegations raised by some viewers of 'pretending to be poor.' He remarked, 'What I find most absurd is that I have never pretended to be poor in any broadcast. Why would I deliberately pretend to be poor? I am happily spending while filming, using what I need and eating. I have never pretended to be poor,' providing specific figures stating his actual living area is about 18 pyeong internally and 20 pyeong including external space.
Finally, he conveyed, 'I give my rent to my father punctually every month. The gift was received in advance because my father is unwell, and I have been paying my rent regularly.' He added, 'The ambiguity in my previous comments led to misunderstanding, for which I apologize. However, it was not intentional, and I felt it was awkward to talk about my personal life. So please don't misunderstand, and I hope you understand it that way.'
