'I am a survivor' PD Cho Sung-hyun confessed that his family became a subject of personal protection during the production process.
Netflix held a press conference for the documentary 'I am a survivor' on the morning of the 13th at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Yongsan, Seoul. At this event, PD Cho Sung-hyun, who directed the piece, attended and discussed the program under the moderation of announcer Park Hye-jin.
'I am a survivor' is the second story of 'I am God,' which generated significant attention when it was released in 2023. The documentary records the voices of survivors regarding four horrific incidents that shocked Korea and the stories of that day, which must not be repeated.
The previously released 'I am God' focused on the dark aspects of those who called themselves gods and disturbed Korea, shedding light on the victims suffering as a result, raising alarms. The second story, 'I am a survivor,' is planned with a total of eight episodes, still ongoing, warning of the future tragedies that may repeat.
PD Cho Sung-hyun faced challenges as he was caught in three injunction lawsuits from JMS. There were many difficulties during the production process. In particular, he revealed, "When we started Season 2, I thought I had no plans to produce it and began my research from the background. My family was unaware that I was making it. But one morning, I received a call from a person claiming to be the representative of a private investigation agency. He said he had requested an investigation into us and knew where we lived, asking to meet." This revelation caused shock.
He continued, "When I met him and heard his story, I felt something was off. I thought that dangerous things could happen to my family, so I felt I needed to be cautious. Without properly explaining to my wife, I took her to the police station. I requested personal protection, not for me, but because I was concerned about my family. That day, the police acknowledged that we were in need of protection. It was not a positive situation."
PD Cho Sung-hyun said, "And on the way back, my wife was wearing a smartwatch but didn't say anything and then became very angry with me, staying near the company for a week without going home. I felt the most sorry at that moment. There are stories like this. I still feel sorry for my family. When my first and second children play at the playground, my wife asks if it's normal that I worry about people around us when other mothers watch their children to keep them from getting hurt. I had no answer to that. I wondered if I should force my family's sacrifice as my own.**
Moreover, he emphatically stated, "Every time, I believed that our children would determine the significance of what their dad did later on. In reality, our child is in the first grade and asks when they can see what dad made, and I tell them that they can see it in ten years. I believe that at that time, my son will acknowledge that my father did things worth it during moments of pain I cannot remember, considering it a meaningful choice."
'I am a survivor' is set to be released at 4 p.m. on the 15th.
