Singer Jeon Somi revealed that she is discussing the reunion of I.O.I.
Recently, Jeon Somi conducted an interview to celebrate the release of her second EP 'Chaotic & Confused' at a cafe in Yongsan, Seoul, where she talked about her new album.
Since joining The Black Label in 2018, Jeon Somi has been active for her seventh year. Recently, as junior singers from various agencies such as Miyao and All Day Project have been making an impact, Jeon Somi did not hide her affection for them.
She noted, "When our company first started, we had 15 employees, but now there are over 150. The company staff and I are very close," adding, "There is no pressure at all. I've seen them from when they were trainees, and since the company was small, I'm close with the trainees and I even participated in the monthly evaluations."
She continued, "When they debut, it's wonderful like a sister's or mother's heart, and when the kids do well, I feel good too. There's no pressure, and as a person from the same company, I want to support them and treat them to a meal. In the future, those friends might have to treat me. (Laughs) It doesn't interfere with my work. I feel like I'm working with the mindset of doing even better with this momentum. I'm just fulfilling my own satisfaction."
Recently, it became a hot topic that much of the soundtrack for the globally popular Netflix animated film 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' was produced by The Black Label's producers.
Jeon Somi said, "The producer brothers have become so cool. How cool can they get? I was actually there next to them during the work, watching it being created. I was in the studio during the recording, and knowing all those behind-the-scenes stories makes me happy. I was at that working site and saw how hard they worked, so it feels good to be receiving love now. I hope to be active in more diverse ways in the future. I don't know who is worried about whom."
When asked if there was a song among the 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' music that she wanted, she replied, "When I was younger, I would think 'I like this song, I want to sing it, I want to take it,' but I feel that songs come to me at the right time. It has to match both my timing and the expression of the song, so no matter how much I sing such songs, they don't feel right for me," adding, "I only saw the boys of the group Sajaboys while working. 'KDEH' is well-made for the anime, so I don't think there was a song I wanted to take."
Jeon Somi also expressed her gratitude regarding her work with Teddy, the head of The Black Label, saying, "Teddy is very detailed and helps me bring out voices I didn't know I had. I learn a lot from him about how to sing, and once I record, the song improves. For solos, I have to fill the entire song, so I have to keep changing my voice to make it interesting to listen to. He tells me this to help me strive for variations and grow as a person and artist."
Having debuted as part of the girl group I.O.I in 2016 and now in her ninth year, Jeon Somi stated that regarding the reunion of I.O.I, "It's not a burden at all; rather, I'm very grateful. Every time I'm asked about I.O.I, I feel thankful that there are still people interested in us and reminiscing about us, and I really want to do it. I hope you keep asking us. Then, I think it might happen someday."
She added, "It seems we are specifically discussing how we can meet and gather to leave beautiful memories for the public. We are talking about ideas that could be just lovely and cute, and even timing-wise, we are talking among ourselves. Everyone wants to do it, and the group chat still exists and is very lively. We are at the stage of having concrete conversations," increasing expectations.
Finally, Jeon Somi discussed her goals as a solo artist, saying, "Solo singers all have different song styles and messages, but I want to compete with the quality of my songs. I believe there are words and expressions that only I can sing. I'm working hard in various aspects to provide enjoyment in listening and watching in various ways."
