'Wednesday' series star Jenna Ortega drew a line against comparisons with 'Squid Game.'
Netflix held a press conference for the original series 'Wednesday' Season 2 on the morning of the 11th at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The event featured the series director Tim Burton and the two lead actors Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers, who discussed the work with local reporters.
'Wednesday' is a Netflix original series depicting the experiences of Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), who is intelligent and skilled at sarcasm, at Nevermore Academy. The first season, released on November 23, 2022, comprising 8 episodes, recorded a cumulative viewing time of 1.7 billion hours, topping the Netflix Global Top 10 TV (English) institutional sector and creating a global phenomenon.
Built on this success, 'Wednesday 2' tells the story of Wednesday Addams returning to Nevermore Academy for a new semester, facing an even creepier and stranger mystery surrounding her, as she seeks the hidden truth behind it.
'Wednesday' ranked first in Netflix in all countries except Korea at the time of its Season 1 release. In this regard, the Korean series 'Squid Game' has been mentioned as a competitor to 'Wednesday.'
In this context, Jenna noted, "I don't think viewing movies or dramas as a competition is a good thing. Because we are very grateful. It's nice that we can do such a show that Korean fans also watch. We came from California. It's nice that a show made by people who grew up in California is being seen by everyone around the world. I think it's important that we can resonate and connect with people's hearts rather than focusing on numbers." She added, "In Part 2, Enid plays a major role starting from episode 6, and Emma loves Korean culture so much. I think you'll enjoy it if you watch."
Director Tim Burton also expressed, "I was delighted that Season 1 itself was successful. I have experienced both failure and success. It makes me happy that people around the world have seen the work we put a lot of effort into. This is definitely not a competition; it makes me happy that the work is appreciated by everyone worldwide."
'Wednesday 2' Part 1 was released on the 6th, with Part 2 set to be released on September 3.
