In 'The Winning Try,' Kim Yi-joon has emerged as a new youth icon.
SBS's Friday-Saturday drama 'The Winning Try' (hereafter 'The Winning Try') has once again set its own highest viewership rating, racing towards success with a boost in every episode. The rising trend cannot exclude the newcomer Kim Yi-joon.
In the drama, he transforms into Oh Yeong-gwang, the vice-captain of the Hanyang High School rugby team, and is once again showcasing his presence following his previous work in the tvN series 'Resident Playbook.' Notably, his dropkick in episodes 5 and 6 of 'The Winning Try' brought a thrilling and emotional impact to the viewers at home.
The unexpected crisis faced by Oh Yeong-gwang (played by Kim Yeong-gwang) pushed the story to its climax. This was due to a tragic overlap between the police civil service exam he had prepared for and the practice match schedule against the unemployed team.
All this time, instead of envisioning a rosy future as a rugby player, Oh Yeong-gwang sought a breakthrough by preparing for the civil service exam. He thought he could not overcome the high wall of reality with poor team performance and felt that he had no potential as a player. Consequently, he declared he would not participate in the practice match, which naturally led to conflicts with his teammates and created a tense atmosphere.
Afterward, Oh Yeong-gwang returned not as a civil service examinee but as a member of the Hanyang High School rugby team. A conversation with coach Joo Ga-ram (played by Yoon Kye-sang), who awakened his potential, along with a heartfelt cheering message from the rugby team in a rolling paper, propelled him back onto the field.
Through this, Oh Yeong-gwang recalled the joy, excitement, and overwhelming moments he felt while playing rugby, ultimately realizing that what he truly wanted to do was rugby. The page of youth that Oh Yeong-gwang wrote was enough to evoke deep emotions and joy in the viewers, further heightening anticipation for the next story.
Kim Yi-joon delivered a performance that resonated with the character. His portrayal vividly captured the essence of Oh Yeong-gwang's anxiety, pain, happiness, and pleasure, leading to a high level of immersion. Thanks to this, the viewers were able to empathize more deeply with the character's narrative and extend their support to the youth moving toward their dreams.
Not just for his acting, Kim Yi-joon's tall and striking visuals also attracted attention. His attractive features and well-fitted rugby uniform perfectly embodied the brain of the rugby team, Oh Yeong-gwang, capturing viewers' attention.
In this way, Kim Yi-joon, who presents the shining face of youth in 'The Winning Try,' leaves us curious about what his next endeavor will be as he continues on a nonstop journey.
