Director Tim Burton of the "Wednesday" series revealed the secret of its unique worldview.
Netflix held a press conference for the original series "Wednesday" Season 2 at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul in Dangun-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the 11th. In attendance were director Tim Burton and the two main stars, Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers, who discussed the work with domestic reporters.
"Wednesday" is a Netflix original series depicting the adventures of the smart and sarcastic Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) at Nevermore Academy. The first season, released on Nov. 23, 2022, achieved a cumulative viewing time of 1.7 billion hours, ranking first in the Netflix global TOP10 TV (English) institutional sector and creating a global phenomenon. Riding on this success, "Wednesday 2" portrays Wednesday Addams returning to Nevermore Academy for a new semester while confronting a more chilling and bizarre mystery surrounding her, alongside her quest for the hidden truth.
In particular, the "Wednesday" series is directed by Tim Burton, who has received overwhelming support from movie fans worldwide for his unique fairy tale-like yet dark worldview and style demonstrated in films such as "Corpse Bride," "Big Fish," "Edward Scissorhands," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and "Alice in Wonderland." Tim Burton, who has maintained a unique worldview for over 40 years, continues his own vision in the "Wednesday" series, including using stop motion.
Regarding this, he emphasized, "The most challenging part is realizing who I am and what kind of worldview I have. I need to think about what stories are in my heart and what I like first. Especially nowadays, with social media and so many elements out there, it can be overwhelming, but if I think about becoming a director, I want to start with the visuals if that's where I want to begin, and I need to be clear about what draws me to something."
"I still don't think this is something my viewers would want to see. Then, I keep thinking of it as a manufactured product. At first, I had no clue, so I didn't consider it at all. I thought it was a good thing to protect my individuality while finding common ground with the audience," he said, revealing the balance between originality and mass appeal.
"Wednesday 2" Part 1 was released on the 6th, and Part 2 will be released on Sept. 3.
