In "Brave Detectives 4," the investigators relentlessly pursued the ruthless criminals who brutally killed the victim.
The 46th episode of "Brave Detectives 4," aired on T-Cast E Channel on the 8th, featured responsible investigator Sergeant Gang Dong-ho, Busan Police Agency scientific investigation officer Sergeant Ahn Seong-soo, former commissioner Yoon Wae-chul from the Scientific Investigation Unit (KCSI), and Sergeant Kim Jin-soo, who shared their solved case reports.
The first case introduced that day began with an assault that occurred in a rain-soaked country house at the foot of a mountain. Shortly after returning home, the male victim was indiscriminately attacked by two assailants in rain gear. Although police were dispatched following a report from his wife, the perpetrators had already fled the scene. Parts of the situation were captured on CCTV, but it was difficult to identify them due to the rain gear and darkness. A 9V battery and battery cover found at the scene were confirmed to be components of a "high-voltage electric shock device." After incapacitating the victim with the electric shock device, the assailants carried out their crime, and the husband ultimately died.
The assailants targeted only the husband, and the investigation team noted that the victim had been involved in real estate investments and development projects worth billions of won, leading to various conflicts and disputes. After tracking the communications of five individuals on the suspect list, they found a company employee in his late 30s who frequently communicated with an associate of the suspect, Mr. Jang (pseudonym). It turned out that this man had a prior charge of breaking and entering with Mr. Jang. They raised suspicion by not directly contacting each other before and after the crime.
The victim and Mr. Jang had been business partners in the past, and when Mr. Jang purchased land from the victim, he only paid the deposit and did not pay the installment, leading the victim to halt construction. The investigation team further investigated the employee. He claimed to have lost the electric shock device but refused a polygraph examination. In this situation, the victim's family announced a reward of 500 million won, prompting the employee to come forward as a tipster and submit recorded evidence proving Mr. Jang's involvement. The police also found the main unit of the electric shock device near the scene. Mr. Jang acknowledged the solicitation but denied any intent to kill. However, he had commissioned the murder on the day construction was halted and resumed construction the day after the incident. A former gangster, who was solicited by Mr. Jang to commit the murder, subcontracted the crime to his juniors, and the two actual perpetrators were apprehended one to two years after the incident following the investigation team's relentless pursuit. Mr. Jang and the executors received life sentences, while the intermediary gangster was sentenced to 13 years.
Next, KCSI introduced a case that was solved through the country's first evidence analysis storage system, recently established in the Busanjin Police Station. Following a report of a "theft at a workshop" from a man, the police discovered the body of a 62-year-old woman, who had been operating a restaurant in the adjacent building, hidden in the attic of the restaurant. The victim had run the restaurant solo for over 30 years after losing her husband, raising three children, and was known for her good nature.
The corpse showed signs of strangulation and had scratch marks from fingernails. Blood was also found under the victim's nails. An autopsy revealed that the perpetrator had further mutilated the body post-mortem. The scientific investigation team collected minute evidence from the victim's neck and face and secured DNA under her nails. Later, analysis using a digital microscope capable of 800x magnification confirmed the presence of wood splinters from the plywood the perpetrator broke in and blue fibers presumed to be from the perpetrator's clothing.
Following inquiries, it was revealed that a man who had been caring for the victim "like a son" had disappeared shortly after the incident. The suspect was a middle-aged unemployed man in his late 40s who had received the victim's assistance in the past. After lying in wait, the police apprehended him, and DNA from the suspect and the victim was found on each other's nails. The blue clothing he wore on the day of the incident also matched the fibers found on the victim's neck.
The investigation revealed that the man, believing the victim would have a large sum of money from a meeting, tried to steal valuables. However, when caught, he strangled her to death and fled with a gold ring and 118,000 won in cash. He stated he manipulated the scene to disguise it as a sexual crime for fear of being the first suspect. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment.
