Actor Yoon Kyung-ho shared the story of his deceased mother for the first time on tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block', while Professor Na Jong-ho of Yale University's Department of Psychiatry publicly expressed his gratitude.
On the broadcast on the 6th, Yoon Kyung-ho revealed that his mother, who struggled with depression, took her own life. He shed tears as he noted, 'I have never spoken about it properly anywhere,' and said, 'My mom was my only friend and she was the first person I thought of whenever something good happened. There was always an emptiness that followed the joy.'
At that time, his maternal grandmother told him to say that she passed away from an accident because 'people might look down on her', and Yoon Kyung-ho lived for a long time hiding that sadness.
After hearing this story, Professor Na Jong-ho noted on social media on the 8th, 'Actor Yoon Kyung-ho's sincerity will be a great comfort to the families of suicide victims,' and added, 'It will give strength to many who have had to hide their sorrow due to the stigma in our society.'
Professor Na explained, 'Research shows that one person's suicide affects up to 135 lives and has a significant impact on an average of 15 to 30 people,' adding, 'In Korea, over 14,000 people make extreme choices every year, affecting 400,000. Our country, which has ranked first in suicide rates among the OECD for the past 20 years, has up to 8 million people categorized as 'survivors of suicide victims.'
On the 9th, Yoon Kyung-ho directly commented on Professor Na's post, stating, 'It was a difficult thing to say, but I also regret it deep down. Thank you for giving me courage. Thanks to you, I also found great comfort,' and added, 'I didn't realize so many people live with the same pain. I hope we can have a society where we can support each other, as you said, professor.'
Meanwhile, born in 1980, Yoon Kyung-ho made his debut in 1999 with the play 'Master Jin's Wedding', and has appeared in the films 'Intimate Strangers', 'Honest Candidate', and the dramas 'Stranger', 'Mr. Sunshine', and 'Itaewon Class'. He is currently meeting audiences on the big screen in the film 'My Daughter is a Zombie', starring Jo Jung-seok.
