(Following Interview ②) Director Lee Sang-geun of 'Pretty Crazy' conveyed his beliefs about the work.
On the 8th, an interview with Director Lee Sang-geun regarding the movie 'Pretty Crazy' (directed by Lee Sang-geun, distributed by CJ ENM, produced by OUI YUYU) was held in Samcheong-dong, Seoul.
'Pretty Crazy' is a devilish comedy that captures the struggles of unemployed young man Gil-gu (Ahn Bo-hyun) as he gets caught in an extraordinary part-time job watching Seon-ji (Lim Yoon-a), who wakes up as a demon every dawn.
Receiving praise for its unique setting of a meeting between a demon and an unemployed young man, 'Pretty Crazy' is a work that Director Lee Sang-geun, known for his blockbuster 'Exit' with 9.42 million admissions, considered for his debut. It is also anticipated as Director Lee's first new work in six years.
On that day, the director shared, "I actually had a long period as a film director intern. So during 'Exit,' Yoon-a made her acting debut, and I also joined the directing debut team, struggling a bit. I was originally a personal intern, and I spent a long time practicing alone in a café. Since I gave back those years, it seems like I was given a lot in return."
Director Lee, who is presenting 'Pretty Crazy' as his so-called second single, said with a smile, "Now that I've made my debut, I'm around second in streaming. I feel like I regretfully dropped just before platinum. The second single has been released, and that's the feeling." He added, "The difference from the first directing is that I felt like something was going to happen. I went in knowing technical and systemic aspects that I didn't know when filming the first one, so many challenging situations were gone."
He continued, "But I still have to be a leader on set. Everyone is watching me. I feel like everyone is judging me, and that feeling and pressure seems to remain. I've heard that even the greatest directors feel most nervous when getting out of the car on set," and he joked, "I wonder when I will be able to enjoy it. I did have a lot of fun during several shoots. I have thought this profession is quite painful and devours your life. However, after finishing, I felt relieved. Looking back, it feels like spring."
He also shared his own pursuit, stating, "While 'Exit' was a story about two people running toward survival, it was a story about youth. This time, I think I wanted to talk about a journey. With the character Gil-gu, using the word 'road,' the journey could represent life. There can be many parallels. I thought of it as a story of two people who randomly meet while walking along the road, each going their own way. I believe that in doing so, it resembles my first work in the sense that it tells the story of finding and walking along the road of people on a journey."
He added, "I think I might try something similar in the next project, but in a different format. And I also wonder if it's time to stop being unemployed. Or maybe do something different. I want to try something else. Of course, the philosophical points I thought of will be contained. However, I want the next ones to be a bit new, with a direction that makes people think, 'Did someone else do this?' But I don't think I will suddenly make a work where I slice people with a chainsaw," adding humor.
