Writer Ko Myung-hwan, a former comedian, recalled the circumstances of a car accident that put him at a crossroads between life and death.
On the 5th, in the 10th anniversary special of tvN STORY 'Accidentally Adult,' Ko Myung-hwan, who has transformed from a comedian to a bestselling author and entrepreneur, appeared as a speaker. That day, Ko Myung-hwan shared about a serious car accident from the past, recounting the turning point that shook his life.
Ko Myung-hwan said, "During the drama filming, the manager was driving drowsily. The speed was 190 km/h." He added, "I was asleep, and when I opened my eyes in the hospital, the doctor said, 'Your heart could burst in one second. Make your will first.'" He recalled that even after making all his wishes, the doctor told him they would explain the symptoms if he was still alive.
After the accident, he was diagnosed with an incurable condition. He confided, "The moment I lost to my physical strength, I had to carry that pain until I die. I realized this in the intensive care unit. Why did I try to live according to standards set by others? I felt it was unfair not to live as myself."
Even after recovery, residual effects remained. Ko Myung-hwan confessed, "Since that incident, I still can't ride in a car driven by my manager. I drive for 10 hours myself," and added, "If there's a sudden stop, my heart races for a month. Even taking three calming pills doesn't help at all."
In his sickbed, he began to read books. He remarked, "Because of the accident, one side of my eye was paralyzed and I couldn't see. Imagine how frustrating it is to read a book with one eye. But my desire overcame it. The books read so well to me."
Afterward, Ko Myung-hwan explored classical literature and began his career as an essay writer. He is currently also active as a restaurant CEO with an annual revenue of over 1 billion won. He added, "I've failed in business four times, but ultimately, I found my standards through failure. Now I truly live freely."
