Kim Nam-gil has done it again.
The Netflix series 'Trigger' ranked 2nd in the global TOP10 series (non-English) institutional sector from July 28 to August 3, according to the Netflix Tudum TOP10 website on the 6th, proving its worldwide popularity. It has also been ranked in the TOP10 lists of 45 countries worldwide, including France, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore.
'Trigger', released on July 25th, is a gun disaster action thriller that depicts the story of two men who pick up guns for their own reasons amid the ongoing delivery of illegal firearms of unknown origin and constant gun incidents in Korea. Kim Nam-gil plays the role of Lee Do, a police officer who takes up arms again for justice. He not only expresses the character's complex emotions with meticulous acting but also showcases his 'mastery of action' with diverse sequences of gunplay and hand-to-hand combat.
In particular, 'Trigger', with its fresh concept asking, 'What would happen if illegal firearms were released into Korea, where half the population is capable of handling guns?', combines the action thriller genre effectively. Kim Nam-gil plays a crucial role in ensuring the narrative doesn't glorify gun use, drawing significant global interest as it made it onto the Netflix global TOP10 list immediately upon release.
◆ Freshness from background differences
In a previous interview, Kim Nam-gil noted, "'Trigger' is a story about people, not guns. Lee Do, knowing the duality of guns better than anyone, tries to stop the individuals pulling the trigger in each episode. For Lee Do, a gun is a tool to suppress someone's trigger."
The American news weekly TIME praised the fresh approach gained from background differences, stating, "If 'Trigger' had been produced in the United States, it would have been just another typical action thriller. However, the background in Korea has very strict gun regulations, and carrying firearms is extremely rare."
The prominent film and TV review aggregator 'Rotten Tomatoes' also recognized the film's high quality with a 100% rating from critics.
◆ Kim Nam-gil hits another peak with diverse action spectacle
'Trigger' confidently makes its mark as a K-content, largely due to Kim Nam-gil's role. The character Lee Do (played by Kim Nam-gil), skilled in gun use, effortlessly handles various firearms while utilizing surrounding objects in action sequences, demonstrating once again that Kim Nam-gil's action is at its peak.
Kim Nam-gil explained the action in 'Trigger', saying, "I focused more on action aimed at protection rather than mere display. The reason Lee Do picks up a gun is more about defense and protection, leading to restrained action that minimizes unnecessary movements."
In response, internet users expressed their enthusiasm, saying, "Kim Nam-gil's action is newly well done compared to the past," "Indeed, action is Kim Nam-gil's strong suit! Especially the police station gun action and the 7:1 action were top-notch," and "Kim Nam-gil's action was so refreshing that I felt winter has arrived."
'Trigger', with its fresh plot and 'Kim Nam-gil style' action, has captured popularity and is currently streaming successfully on Netflix.
