An animation is shaking things up on both Netflix and Billboard. The Netflix animated film 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' has reached the 4th highest box office ranking of all time, and its OST continues to achieve the remarkable feat of having 8 songs enter the Billboard singles chart simultaneously.
According to Netflix's official ranking as of 6th (local time), 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' has accumulated 158.8 million views, placing it 4th in the Netflix global film institutional sector rankings of all time. This ranking surpasses 'The Adam Project' and is approaching the figure of 'Don't Look Up' starring Leonardo DiCaprio (171.4 million).
What's interesting is the box office curve. Unlike most content that peaks in the first 1-2 weeks, 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' is experiencing a steady increase in views even in its 6th week post-release, becoming a new model of 'word-of-mouth success.'
The performance on the music charts is even better. According to the Billboard chart released on the same day, the main OST 'Golden' by the girl group Huntrix maintains the No. 2 position on the Hot 100 chart for two consecutive weeks, nearing the top. The track first entered at No. 81 but has since risen to 23rd, then 6th, 4th, and now 2nd.
The antagonist boy group 'Sizaboys' is also making its presence known on Billboard. The title track 'Your Idol' secured the 9th position, while 'Soda Pop' landed at 16th. Additionally, Huntrix's 'How It's Done' (19th), the duet 'Free' by Lumi and Jinwoo (28th), 'What It Sounds Like' (29th), and 'Takedown' (Huntrix version at 33rd, TWICE version at 67th) have all made an appearance on the singles chart, totaling 8 songs. The OST album also jumped to No. 2 on the 'Billboard 200' chart.
The story is also based on the K-pop universe. Set against the backdrop of the idol group Huntrix, who defeat evil spirits through songs and performances to save the world, it incorporates elements of K-culture such as Korean gimbap, ramen, oriental medicine clinics, and Namsan Tower. On social media, the 'gimbap mukbang challenge' has gone viral, and the participation of real K-pop stars like TWICE, Rosé, and Teddy has maximized the immersion.
Recently, the U.S. media outlet The Wrap reported that 'Netflix is actively considering a sequel, live-action remake, and musical adaptation, hinting at an expansion into a global IP.'
'K-Pop Demon Hunters' is an original animation produced by Netflix, featuring voice performances by Lee Byung-hun and Ahn Hyoseop, music by TWICE and producer Teddy, and direction by Maggie Kang and Chris Applehans.
