The Defects provided viewers with suspense through a whirlwind development that held their tension until the end.
In the sixth episode of The Defects (directed by Oh Gi-hwan, written by Ahn So-jung), which aired on Dec. 5, the scene of Kim Ah-hyun (Won Jina) weeping over the death of Seok-su (Oh Seung-jun) alongside the children stirred the tear ducts of viewers at home.
Ah-hyun and the children were named suspects in the murder of a pastor couple, raising the tension in the drama. The children, now in a position of being pursued by the police due to a public wanted notice, reached out to Detective Choi (Jeon Shin-hwan), the only person they could trust. Subsequently, the tragic story of Seok-su, who had been adopted by politician Kwon Gang-man (Son Jong-hak) as a display only to be abused and abandoned, was revealed, evoking sympathy.
Kim Se-hee (Yum Jung-ah), who had been using Seok-su as a tool for threats, abruptly changed her attitude when the Bioethics Act, known as the "The Defects Law," was passed. She chillingly remarked, "This is just the real start. The Defects," treating the returned children like objects.
Meanwhile, with Seok-su, who was thought to be dead, reappearing, Kwon Gang-man found himself in a difficult situation and took action to eliminate his adopted son. At the same time, Se-hee's daughter (Kim Ji-an) also requested help from the children due to her anxiety of being discarded when she becomes useless someday. Thus, Ah-hyun saved Se-hee's daughter, dramatically reversing the flow of the story.
Although the situation seemed to improve temporarily when Ah-hyun rescued Se-hee's daughter, the position of the children soon became exposed to Kwon Gang-man's group, raising tension once again. The captured children faced threats, and Jung-hyun (Kim Jin-young), who was tracking Detective Choi, heightened the crisis further by blowing up his vehicle.
Even in a situation where his life was threatened by his adoptive father, Seok-su pleaded, "I will die as you wish, Father. So please, do not touch the children," and ultimately Jung-hyun appeared, pulling the trigger on him, leading the drama into yet another critical situation.
At the end of the broadcast, Seok-su ultimately passed away beside the children. Returning to the hideout with Se-hee's daughter, Ah-hyun hugged Seok-su and cried out, while Jung-hyun and the gang locked the children in the hideout and set it on fire, cornering them. Thus, Ah-hyun's complex expression, filled with despair and anger amidst the flames, closed the ending, sparking curiosity about future developments.
