Actor Kwak Do-won returns to the stage through a play. This marks his return after about three years, following a controversy over drunk driving in 2022.
On the 5th, the Theater Company Twotmaru and the National Theater revealed the casting lineup for the play 'A Streetcar Named Desire.' This production features Song Sun-mi, Han Da-gam, Kwak Do-won, Oh Jeong-yeon, and Bae Gi-seong.
Kwak Do-won will play the role of 'Stanley,' depicted as an embodiment of desire and violence. This character was previously played by Marlon Brando in the film, and the original work is by American playwright Tennessee Williams. Published in 1947, this work won the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and it was later adapted into a film that won four awards at the 24th Academy Awards.
Previously, Kwak Do-won was charged with drunk driving in September 2022. At the time, his blood alcohol level was reported to be 0.158%, exceeding the legal limit for license suspension (0.08%). Following this, Kwak Do-won received a summary order to pay a fine of 10 million won and ceased his entertainment activities.
In 2023, he appeared in the film 'Firefighter'; however, that film was shot before the drunk driving incident, and Kwak Do-won did not participate in any promotional activities. Director Kwak Kyung-taek publicly criticized Kwak Do-won in media interviews, stating he should take 'greater responsibility.'
Meanwhile, the play 'A Streetcar Named Desire' will be performed at the Daloreum Theater of the National Theater in Seoul on October 9 and 10. The role of Blanche will be double-cast between Song Sun-mi and Han Da-gam, while Oh Jeong-yeon will play Stella, and Bae Gi-seong will portray Mitch.
