PD Lee Woo-hyung, who is in charge of directing the new series of The Great Escape, revealed how he came to take on the program.
On the 5th, on the YouTube channel 'Channel 15,' Lee Woo-hyung PD, who is directing alongside Ko Kyung-pyo, Baekhyun, and Yeo Jin-goo from the Tving 'The Great Escape: The Story,' appeared and conducted a live broadcast with PD Na Young-seok.
That day, as soon as PD Lee Woo-hyung finished his greeting, PD Na Young-seok started teasing him, saying, 'PD Lee Woo-hyung has drunk from the poisoned chalice.'
Previously, the series The Great Escape was directed by PD Jeong Jong-yeon from The Genius. After PD Jeong Jong-yeon left CJ ENM, it was four years later that PD Lee Woo-hyung took on the new direction and began The Great Escape: The Story.
Na Young-seok asked, 'The world of The Great Escape was originally there, and I took on the new direction with a spin-off, reboot feeling. If you work and inherit something that someone else did well, you have to do well just to break even. Usually, you get criticized. What made you dare to accept the direction?'
In response, PD Lee Woo-hyung confessed, 'The term poisoned chalice is exactly right. In fact, when our tvN headquarters talked about reviving the The Great Escape IP with Tving, quite a few friends declined.'
He shared, 'I knew how strong the poison was, so many declined, but I thought it was a shame to lose the IP. It's a program made by excellent people, and I thought it wouldn't be right not to see it forever, so I even considered using a pseudonym at first. Anyway, it seems it's pretty obvious now. I am working hard.'
PD Lee Woo-hyung and PD Na Young-seok also clarified the reason why the new members were introduced on the live broadcast. PD Na Young-seok said, 'Just to avoid misunderstandings, Hyung Ho and Dong-hyun have schedules. I heard that Byung-jae just finished his schedule a little while ago. However, due to the circumstances, he couldn't appear. According to comments, Baekhyun just arrived in the country not long ago.'
