PD Lee Woo-hyung, who is directing the new series of The Great Escape, has clarified misunderstandings regarding leaked filming photos.
On the 5th, on the YouTube channel 'Channel 15ya', PD Lee Woo-hyung, along with Ko Kyung-pyo, Baekhyun, and Yeojin-goo from The Great Escape: The Story, appeared for a live broadcast with PD Na Young-seok.
Previously, the The Great Escape series was directed by PD Jung Jong-yeon of The Genius. After PD Jung Jong-yeon left CJ ENM, PD Lee Woo-hyung took over directing and started The Great Escape: The Story after 4 years.
In response, Na Young-seok asked, 'The world of The Great Escape originally existed, and I took over directing it with a spin-off, reboot feeling. When you have a job, if you inherit something that someone else did well, you have to do well just to break even. Usually, it gets criticized. What made you dare to accept directing?'
In response, PD Lee Woo-hyung confessed, 'The phrase "poisoned chalice" fits perfectly. When our tvN headquarters discussed revisiting The Great Escape IP with Tving, quite a few friends declined. They knew how toxic it could be, so many turned it down. Nevertheless, I felt the IP was precious.'
PD Lee expressed, 'It's a program made by wonderful people, so I thought it wouldn't be right never to see it again, and I considered using a pseudonym at first. In any case, it seems I can't now. I'm working hard on it.'
Moreover, PD Lee Woo-hyung corrected viewers' misunderstandings. He referred to the time machine episode, saying, 'That's related to manpower. There's a wheeled carriage below. There was a misunderstanding recently when a photo circulated. A photo of these individuals wearing eye masks while moving appeared. It was taken when they got off the time machine and were moving elsewhere. It seems they misunderstood it was taken in intervals.'
PD Lee said, 'That scene was their commute. This time, we actually omitted the commute. They came through OTT, and we tried to pursue immersion, so we skipped it. They completely didn't know what was happening until they entered the hideout doctor's room. Coming in wearing eye masks is the same, but that scene was filmed and caused misunderstandings.'
Upon hearing this, Na Young-seok stated, 'It could be filmed in intervals. However, it's a time machine, and since we deliberately moved them, the story starts immediately. This means we invested time, expenses, and effort to maintain immersion. That's how crucial immersion is for this program.'
