In 'Mary Kills People,' Lee Bo-young and Lee Min-ki exchanged a 'wistful kiss' amidst tender emotions, while the 'shocking twist ending' that raises doubts about Lee Min-ki's identity left viewers buzzing.
The second episode of the MBC weekend drama 'Mary Kills People' (written by Lee Soo-ah, directed by Park Joon-woo), which aired on the 2nd, recorded a nationwide rating of 2.1% and a rating of 2.3% in the capital area, which was lower than the 3.2% (nationwide according to Nielsen Korea) recorded during its premiere, resulting in some disappointment. However, in the ending scene where Jo Hyun-woo (played by Lee Min-ki) gives a kiss to Woo So-jung (played by Lee Bo-young) just as detective Bae Hyung-soo (played by Tae Hang-ho) calls Hyun-woo, the peak rating soared to 3.5%, raising hopes for a rebound.
In the second episode of 'Mary Kills People,' the delicate emotions between Woo So-jung and Jo Hyun-woo, who has chosen death and is approaching assisted dying, were depicted as they shared empathy and compassion. The feelings between Woo So-jung, who wants to save Jo Hyun-woo despite needing to assist in his death, and Jo Hyun-woo, facing death through assisted dying, erupted, foreshadowing a fierce storm to come.
The second episode began with Woo So-jung and her college classmate Kangsik Hyun (played by Kang Ki-young), along with nurse Choi Ye-na (played by Yoon Ga-i), forming a team to assist patients facing suffering. Woo So-jung reflected on the three criteria for assisted dying: 'impossible to treat with a doctor's opinion from more than three doctors, unbearable physical disability, and pain that cannot be controlled by any medication.' Kangsik Hyun added, 'We plan to mix benpo and provide it to the clients,' as he poured champagne for Woo So-jung and Choi Ye-na.
Returning to the present, Woo So-jung and Kangsik Hyun met with a high school student, Joo Su-young (played by Lee Won-jeong), who received a terminal diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer and was told she had about two weeks left to live. Joo Su-young expressed her desperation, saying, 'I want to die quickly. It's unfair to die, but I don't want to endure even more suffering.' Woo So-jung ultimately decided to assist in the death of Joo Su-young, who was in a more serious condition than Jo Hyun-woo.
Later, while visiting a welfare hospital run by Yang Shin-bu (played by Kwon Hae-hyo), Woo So-jung coincidentally ran into Jo Hyun-woo, who said, 'I thought about what I really want to do, and I wanted to sort out my surroundings,' reflecting heeding Woo So-jung's advice to prepare for his last moments. Woo So-jung then encountered Jo Hyun-woo sitting on the stairs and extended her hand to him as he said, 'My eyes often get blurry these days.' The two held hands tightly and descended the dark stairs together. Jo Hyun-woo asked, 'Why do you do this work? Helping those who are dying.' In response, Woo So-jung articulated her strong belief in assisted dying, saying, 'I think people should be able to choose life and death. Death is not a crime.'
Amidst this, Jo Hyun-woo expressed a desire to go to a place he wanted to be with Woo So-jung, who once asked him to spend his last moments at his happiest place, leading him to the orphanage where he lived during childhood. Inside the orphanage, Jo Hyun-woo naturally held Woo So-jung's hand and expressed his wish to spend his last moments in the neighborhood where he lived with his parents. He calmly conveyed to Woo So-jung, who asked why he chose assisted dying, 'I've tried everything, but nothing has changed. I could give up after trying it all.'
Unable to give up on Jo Hyun-woo, Woo So-jung secretly looked into new clinical trials and brought Hyun-woo along, but he exploded in anger, saying, 'You're just like other doctors. You don't care how much pain the patient is in,' and pushed her away before leaving. Afterward, Woo So-jung tried to find Jo Hyun-woo, searching from the delivery service he worked for to the goshiwon where he lived, but ultimately could not locate him.
However, when Woo So-jung returned to the welfare hospital and was threatened by an abusive husband attacking a patient, Jo Hyun-woo appeared and saved her. Woo So-jung treated Jo Hyun-woo's hand, which was injured while striking at the abusive husband with a flower pot, and the two apologized for their past mistakes. At the same time, when Jo Hyun-woo gifted her a hairpin, saying to pin up her bangs that draped down, Woo So-jung felt overwhelmed. She confessed to Jo Hyun-woo, saying, 'Do you really want to end it like this?' while expressing, 'I hope you live.' Jo Hyun-woo was moved by Woo So-jung's heartfelt wish for his survival, and eventually confirmed their feelings with a wistful kiss.
Meanwhile, in this broadcast, the detective Bae Hyung-soo appearing at the goshiwon where Woo So-jung went to find Jo Hyun-woo raised suspicions as he paid Jo Hyun-woo's overdue rent. Moreover, while Woo So-jung and Jo Hyun-woo were generating wistfulness through their kiss, when the detective called Jo Hyun-woo on a crowded street, a completely different face of Jo Hyun-woo appeared, delivering a shocking revelation about his true identity.
