'Mary Kills People' actress Lee Bo-young captivated the home audience with just her gaze.
Lee Bo-young appeared as emergency physician Woo So-jung in the MBC Friday and Saturday drama 'Mary Kills People' (written by Lee Soo-ah, directed by Park Jun-woo), which aired on the 2nd.
In the first episode, the reason why the emergency physician Woo So-jung, who saves lives, decided to assist in dying was depicted, while in the second episode, the constant torment of Woo So-jung as she proceeds with assisted dying for patients was portrayed.
Woo So-jung provides assisted dying only to patients who meet her established criteria. Although the final choice is left to the patients until the end, Woo So-jung helps ensure that patients who choose assisted dying do not have regrets by reminding them of their happiest memories. All the expenses received for the assisted dying process from patients were donated to Maria Welfare Hospital.
Woo So-jung's attitude of genuinely caring for patients stood out, rather than just as a mere number. When the stage 4 colorectal cancer patient Jo Soo-young (played by Lee Won-jung) tried to decide on death without telling her father, Woo So-jung calmly urged her to ponder if there was anything weighing on her mind or that she needed to resolve.
Amid this, Woo So-jung felt empathy for terminal cancer patient Jo Hyun-woo (played by Lee Min-ki) and gradually found herself becoming emotionally involved. Although she promised assisted dying, Woo So-jung, who was troubled by thoughts of Jo Hyun-woo, researched brain tumors overnight and even suggested clinical trials happening in the United States. She candidly confessed, "I wish you could live."
Meanwhile, as the investigation led by Ahn Tae-seong (played by Kim Tae-woo) closed in on her due to trauma related to her mother's death, Woo So-jung's secret regarding the drug was exposed by Woo Mi (played by Kang Na-eun), a friend of her nephew Jae-yeon (played by Kim Sang-ji), raising curiosity about future developments.
In this way, Lee Bo-young elegantly portrayed the character Woo So-jung, who has a limited range of emotional expression, solely through her gaze, proving her solid acting skills once again. Amid the emotional ups and downs, Lee Bo-young delivered a high-density performance that left no room for doubt, showcasing a wide acting spectrum. Lee Bo-young solidified her presence by fully immersing herself in the character with subtle emotional lines expressed through restrained internal acting.
The drama 'Mary Kills People,' featuring Lee Bo-young, airs every Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m.
