Dex, amid acting skill controversies, shows sincerity and humility… "I was afraid my weaknesses would be exposed, but I want to learn more."
Dex (real name Kim Jin-young) has officially challenged himself in acting through 'The Defects', while stories revealing his sincerity continue amidst ongoing controversies about his acting skills.
The ENA drama 'The Defects', which first aired on 21st, is an action thriller genre dealing with the survival and revenge of children abandoned by adoptive parents, featuring Yum Jung-ah, Won Jina, Choi Young-jun, Lee Na-eun, and Dex. In the drama, Dex plays 'Jeong Hyun,' the de facto operator of an illegal adoption trading organization, portraying a ruthless human weapon.
However, immediately after the first broadcast, viewers' reactions to Dex's acting were sharply divided. Despite being a cold and expressionless character, criticisms pointed out that his vacant gaze, awkward gait, and subtle expression handling hindered immersion in some scenes. On the other hand, some viewers noted, "For a first-time actor, it was decent," and "He matched well in action scenes," highlighting his potential as a newcomer.
Director Oh Gi-hwan, who produced the show, also revealed his reason for casting Dex, saying, "I did not know about the entertainer Dex. I focused on the potential of actor Kim Jin-young," adding, "The Kim Jin-young at the beginning of filming and at the end was completely different. His growth was definitely visible."
In this regard, Dex recently appeared on the YouTube channel 'Zzanbro' and candidly shared behind-the-scenes stories of 'The Defects' and his struggles with acting. He confessed, "At first, I didn't realize this role was important. I thought it was more about experience than a desire to act," adding, "I had the courage because my character has almost no lines. I was afraid my weaknesses would be exposed and I was only thinking not to cause a nuisance."
The co-star Won Jina added, "At first, Dex was cautious and innocent, but it was impressive to see him gradually immerse himself in acting on set," testifying to Dex's sincerity and passion. Dex then expressed, "Even if I can't act well, I get drawn in if my counterpart does well," and, "I've now started acting classes. I want to fill in my shortcomings," demonstrating his eagerness to grow.
His humble attitude persisted throughout the broadcast. His words, "I am not someone who prepared to be a celebrity. As a former soldier, I always remain self-aware and try not to make mistakes anywhere," reflected Dex's self-perception as a 'rolling stone' while aspiring to become more solid.
There are also those who were impressed by Dex's attitude. Producer Choi Byeong-gil recently expressed through his social media that Dex's acting was "not because he is a newcomer, but because he was a gem filled with pure talent," further stating, "The emotional depth and presence Dex displayed in 'Tarot' cannot be dismissed lightly." He concluded with a supportive message, encouraging him not to feel intimidated and to avoid being easily categorized, saying, "You will become a very precious actor."
Dex, who was loved for his unrestrained wit and action in entertainment, is now showing another face to the world as an actor, Kim Jin-young. Enduring both criticism and support, he has chosen to acknowledge his shortcomings and seek learning. Even if he is incomplete now, what kind of brilliance will his next performance hold? Many are gathering their support and expectations for his journey, which has just begun as an actor.
