The ordinary life of Lee Young-ae, the actress from 'Walking On Thin Ice,' begins to show cracks of tragedy.
Set to premiere on Sept. 20, KBS2's new weekend mini-series 'Walking On Thin Ice' (written by Jeon Young-shin, directed by Song Hyun-wook, produced by Baram Pictures and Slingshot Studio) depicts the perilous and desperate partnership of desperate parent Kang Eun-soo, who wishes to protect her family, and the two-faced teacher Lee Kyung, who coincidentally acquires a bag of drugs.
Lee Young-ae plays Kang Eun-soo, who is pushed to the brink after her husband's illness worsens and economic bankruptcy strikes overnight. One day, while struggling to survive in her shattered life, Eun-soo discovers a mysterious bag that someone left behind, entangling her in a partnership with her daughter's after-school art instructor Lee Kyung (Kim Young-kwang). Through this work, Lee Young-ae is expected to showcase her unique presence once again by portraying a character in extreme situations with a solid yet deep emotional line.
In stills released on the 31st, Lee Young-ae vividly portrays the cracks of ordinary life and the life narrative of Kang Eun-soo, who is in a crisis, in just three frames. First, in a scene where she playfully draws hearts for her daughter heading to school, Lee Young-ae's bright smile reveals Kang Eun-soo's warm side, feeling simple happiness as an ordinary housewife and mother. The tidy apron and cheerful expression, along with a moment of an ordinary and simple life, contrast sharply with the tragedy that is to come, enhancing the immersion.
Additionally, Eun-soo working in a uniform at a supermarket has also been captured. Lee Young-ae's face, displaying a blank expression while working, reveals Eun-soo's hard life, enduring the harsh reality in an ordinary labor setting.
The subsequent stills present a distinctly different atmosphere from the previous two, capturing attention. Lee Young-ae's anxious gaze, as if witnessing a shocking sight, her tightly closed lips, and her stiff posture hint at the cracks of tragedy infiltrating her daily life, creating tension. The gradual changes in Lee Young-ae's subtle emotional shifts amplify curiosity about the future development of the story while adding depth to the character narrative.
The production team noted that "Lee Young-ae expressed the urgency hidden behind her bright smile and the strength to endure quietly even in moments of collapse, captivating everyone on set with every moment" and added, "Her performance will lead Kang Eun-soo's confrontation with crises and choices more persuasively," urging viewers' anticipation and interest.
'Walking On Thin Ice' is a well-made work that combines the talents of director Song Hyun-wook, recognized as a craftsman of detail while traversing various genres, and writer Jeon Young-shin, known for her finely crafted writing with high realism. Together with the three leading actors Lee Young-ae, Kim Young-kwang, and Park Yong-woo, along with seasoned actors such as Bae Soo-bin, Jo Yeon-hee, and Hwang Jae-yeol, the production is being highlighted as a top anticipated work for the second half of the year.
