"The words I desperately wanted to hear were, 'I misunderstood you.'" Broadcaster Jeong Seon-hee confessed her reluctance to step back into the world for a long time amid the deep wounds she experienced after losing her husband and facing public criticism.
Jeong Seon-hee's life was overshadowed by unbearable tragedy following the death of her husband, Ahn Jae-hwan, in 2008. In addition to the sorrow of losing her husband just a year after their marriage, various misfortunes and conspiracy theories surrounding her, along with the cold gaze and criticism from the public, drove her into the most difficult period of her life. Looking back at that time, Jeong Seon-hee said, "I was in shock, hospitalized, and on the verge of death." As if the pain of losing her husband wasn't enough, Jeong Seon-hee had to stop all her broadcasting activities, avoiding stepping out into the world for more than a decade to the point she couldn't even read online comments.
However, there were those who silently supported Jeong Seon-hee by her side. In particular, her young niece, despite being only 5 years old, held back tears as she visited her aunt in the hospital, which moved many people. Jeong Seon-hee expressed her deep gratitude to her niece, who regarded her as a role model even when she was at her lowest.
Breaking her long silence, Jeong Seon-hee stood before the public again through her YouTube channel "The Jeong Seon-hee Who Left Home." Earlier, Jeong Seon-hee had gone paragliding in Danyang, and when she found a fruit gift left by a fan at a rest area, she became emotional, saying, "People are kind." She was also unable to hide her surprise at the numerous fans requesting photos before filming, and she was deeply touched by the warm welcome instead of the cold gaze she had anticipated.
What particularly moved Jeong Seon-hee was a comment from a fan. "Someone took a day off work to listen to my radio on the day I returned as a radio DJ. He recalled that date exactly, so I wondered how he knew; it turns out he took off work just to listen to my radio that day. He asked me to remember him. Someone has taken a day off work because they miss your voice," Jeong Seon-hee said, shedding hot tears. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to those who had supported her for a long time, saying, "I was very grateful. It wasn't easy to protect Jeong Seon-hee in South Korea. You've worked hard."
Another touching moment came during a recent meeting with a vendor at Danyang's Gungyeong Market. A vendor who recognized Jeong Seon-hee late had tears in his eyes as he said, "I misunderstood a bit. Someone explained it to me, and it wasn't like that. From then on, I understood. I misunderstood a little." Jeong Seon-hee replied with a bright smile, saying, "I will clear up the misunderstanding. No, it was already resolved. Thank you." She shared with the production team, "I truly heard the words I wanted to hear. The words I longed to hear: 'I misunderstood you.'"
Overcoming the darkness of deep trauma and public criticism, Jeong Seon-hee's journey to find light again through warm support and self-reflection provides hope and comfort to many.
