20 years ago, the worst broadcasting accident in history occurred.
On July 30, 2005, indie bands appeared in the 'Is this song good?' corner of MBC's 'Live Music Camp.' Lux was selected as the first performer, and over 20 punk members who joined in helped them secure a grants opportunity on terrestrial music broadcasting.
However, one member from Couch and one member from Spiky Bratz, who were jumping on stage, suddenly stripped off their pants and exposed their lower bodies. The camera, which was focused on the stage, hurriedly turned away, but the broadcasting accident continued for 6 to 7 seconds. The MC Mong and Shin Ji, who were hosting at the time, sincerely apologized with serious expressions.
The police, alerted by the report, dispatched to the scene, and Lux leader Won Jong-hee along with the two members involved in the exposure incident were taken to the police station. Lux and Couch were banned from appearing on three major terrestrial broadcasters, and the 'Live Music Camp' production team also faced serious penalties, leading to the program's cancellation.
In May 2023, director Kwon Jae-young recalled through a YouTube video, "At that time, the writer of the program is my current wife," and noted, "Immediately after the incident, the production team pulled them off the stage and reported it to the police, and not only the persons involved in the incident but also the responsible director and writer were taken as witnesses to the police station."
He added, "The individuals involved in the incident underwent a drug test, which ultimately came back negative. The fact that it happened while fully sober is even more shocking," and stated, "The public's perception of indie bands in Hongdae deteriorated drastically, setting the entire scene back more than 10 years. It also helped hip-hop rise to the mainstream."
The members of Couch and Spiky Bratz, who caused the disruption, were imprisoned for about three months before facing trial, receiving sentences of 10 months and 8 months in prison, respectively, along with 2 years of probation. Following this incident, music broadcasts generally implemented a delay of 5 to 10 seconds, and sometimes as much as 5 minutes, and the main control room began to prepare extra screens to prevent accidents.
Last year, Lux leader Won Jong-hee publicly apologized once again. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, he stated, "On July 30, 2005, 19 years ago, there was an incident of exposure during the live broadcast of MBC 'Music Camp.' I sincerely apologize once again for causing public concern at that time."
He continued, "I will spend the rest of my life reflecting on my mistakes. For several years after the incident, I have continuously apologized in various ways, but I sincerely apologize again through this YouTube video. I am truly sorry," as he conveyed his regrets on behalf of those members who caused the incident.
