Director Phil Kamsung expressed his affection for Jo Jung-seok.
On the 29th, an interview with director Phil Kamsung of the movie 'My Daughter is a Zombie' was conducted at a cafe in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
'My Daughter is a Zombie' (directed by Phil Kamsung, distributed by NEW, produced by Studio N) is a comedic drama about a doting father who begins secret training to protect his daughter, who has become the last remaining zombie in the world.
On that day, director Phil Kamsung, who was in charge of directing, was asked, 'What if it weren't Jo Jung-seok?' and he responded, "I don't even want to imagine it,' which caught attention.
Director Phil Kamsung, who was a fan of the original webtoon, recalled, "I thought from the moment I saw the original and the script that I wanted Jo Jung-seok to do this. Fortunately, he happily said, 'This really feels like me.' If he had declined, I would have thought about the next actor then, but I considered it like a love letter. Fortunately, he said, 'This really feels like me,' and it was a joy that made me feel like I was flying.
He also talked about the 'dad moments' he saw in Jo Jung-seok. He said, "I saw a lot. There were many parts that truly could only come from a father's acting. Especially, there's a scene I really like, where while training Sua, he tells her to 'ask', and then Sua gets bitten and steps back. At that moment, he says 'Well done,' and I think that expression really explains this movie well. I think that's something that could only come out with Jo Jung-seok's excellence and the added layer of the father code."
He also talked about the comedy master moments. Director Phil Kamsung said, "Comedy is actually difficult. There are parts where you laugh and cry within a single scene. It's not something you can intend to do; the actor and the synchronization have to match well. I always thought that Jo Jung-seok was looking at the same place. So even with just a little conversation, with just a few words, he would say, 'I'll give it a try,' and it was really nice that he put his own wit into it."
He continued, "We shot many challenging scenes at the beginning. For example, the neighbor lady turns into a zombie. But when it comes to the part where he says, 'What is the lady in unit 101 doing?!', Jo Jung-seok added his own exquisite wit, transforming that into comedy, and I was really impressed. He was truly an impressive actor," and added, "After finishing the difficult shoot, while eating together, I was convinced that we were looking at the same place in spirit. Jo Jung-seok also said, 'Director, it will be good for me until the end!' and that is still being upheld."
