The band Dragon Pony comforts the anxieties of youth with their original song based on their experiences as trainees.
Dragon Pony held a showcase on the 29th afternoon at the YES24 Wonder Rock Hall in Seoul's Seodaemun District to celebrate the release of their new single 'Earth Boy' and talked about the new song.
Dragon Pony (An Taekyu, Pyeon Seonghyeon, Kwon Sehyuk, Go Ganghun) debuted last year and has proven their musical capabilities with all members actively participating in the production of their songs since their first EP 'POP UP' through to their second EP 'Not Out.'
The digital single 'Earth Boy' from Dragon Pony is an original song written during their trainee period. Dragon Pony has previously previewed the song on stage for fans at solo concerts and festivals. With a surge of requests for its official release, Dragon Pony decided to release the song to repay the fans' enthusiastic support.
Go Ganghun said, "This is a song that many fans have been waiting for, and since it's our first time releasing it as a digital single, I have even more affection for it. I would appreciate it if you listen to it well."
On the day of his birthday, An Taekyu said, "This was a song that received a lot of love during live performances and many festivals, so I am grateful that we can finally release it," while Kwon Sehyuk added, "Since this song has been in preparation for a long time, I am curious about how it will be received. I am very happy."
Pyeon Seonghyeon shared, "During our trainee days, we experienced a lot of emotions, and this song contains the precious anxieties, memories, and times that can only be felt then. I am grateful and it feels meaningful to release it."
'Earth Boy' is a song that captures the inner turmoil of wandering youth, akin to a spaceship losing its signal and drifting through the universe. The song features meticulously layered instruments and choruses to create a sense of space, with an emphasis on audibly expressing loneliness in the vast universe.
The lyrics, which candidly convey complex emotions such as anxiety and loneliness felt in repeated despair, deeply and delicately resonate with listeners. The image of Dragon Pony, who become each other's light in the dark, overcoming wounds and growing, is fully captured within.
An Taekyu explained about 'Earth Boy,' saying, "We captured our inner struggles of confusion and wandering, like a spaceship drifting through space. We encapsulated the feelings of not knowing where we are or where we are headed during our trainee days."
When asked about the reason for naming the song 'Earth Boy,' Pyeon Seonghyeon replied, "We are clearly boys living on Earth, but it makes us wonder why we feel like we are drifting rather than being grounded, which led us to title it as such with a desire to be 'Earth Boys.'"
Regarding the long time it took to release a song written before their debut, he explained, "We had a solo concert last May and promised to release it before the summer ends. We had planned to release it before then, but we couldn't keep that promise. This time, we couldn't delay it any longer, so we worked hard to make it happen. We worked as quickly as possible."
When asked if the release was intentionally timed with his birthday, An Taekyu smiled and said, "It wasn't intentional, but as we prepared, we synchronized our schedule and thought it would have significance for fans, so we chose this day."
Dragon Pony, which will celebrate its first anniversary of debut in September, remarked, "We've experienced many things over the year, including new opportunities. We tried out broadcasting for the first time and participated in both domestic and international festivals, even holding our first solo concert in Taiwan, where both days sold out. Having those experiences has been emotional and motivating, and we want to share even better music moving forward based on them."
Regarding the recent rise of bands, he stated, "If we can contribute even a little to the band boom, I would feel good about it," and added, "We have been told that we are rewriting Korean rock, and since we have mounted the tapestry of Korea's band history, I want to write that history beautifully. We are striving to grow with good music and impressive performances without being complacent."
Finally, Dragon Pony conveyed, "While 'Earth Boy' contains the anxieties and concerns of our trainee days, I believe it can also be relevant to our current situation. We are slightly different from our trainee days, but we are still in search of something, pursuing it, and striving hard. I think we are still trying to find our path and will need to continue to work hard and research to find a stable orbit."
In particular, Dragon Pony heated up the scene by additionally performing 'Not Out' and 'Morse Code.'
Meanwhile, Dragon Pony's digital single 'Earth Boy' will be released today (the 29th) at 6 p.m. across various music streaming sites.
