The student had completed a gifted education program and was a perfect model student with exemplary school life and extracurricular activities, but he was shocked by an unprecedented score on his first exam as a first-year high school student. He scored 10 out of 40 points on the English open-ended questions, failing to even make half. The student's mother urged him, saying, "Didn't I tell you that there's a big difference between middle school and high school studies? You need to be thorough in English!" Eventually, the son exploded in frustration, saying, "It would be better to focus on performance evaluations than this!" Their conversation ended with both mother and son feeling hurt.
The conflict between mother and son deepened with the issue of private tutoring. The student's mother suspended tutoring for two years after her son said he would "study on his own." However, due to his poor grades, she brought up the tutoring issue again. The student revealed, "My mom directly told me to prepare in advance when I was in middle school, and everything started to go awry from then. Jun Hyun-moo, who observed this situation as a representative of the Mokdong Kids, said, "Nothing has changed since I attended school. Four of us gathered for private tutoring. Other friends went to science high schools, but my math skills were terribly inadequate. So, I pretended to understand the lessons. There were expectations from my mother..." empathizing with the pressure the student felt. The student's mother remarked, "He has had a good ability to absorb studies since he was young. Senior moms said that studying advanced high school mathematics was necessary for flexibility in other subjects, and I thought my son would be fine studying in advance without complaint."
