Comedian Song Pil-geun reflected on his battle with necrotizing pancreatitis, confessing moments when he hovered between life and death.
On the 25th, a video titled "The moment my wife said one word as my pancreas was melting away" was released on the YouTube channel 'WIRACLE'. On this day, Song Pil-geun appeared as a guest and quietly shared his experiences during the three months spent in the hospital.
Song Pil-geun said, "I contracted necrotizing pancreatitis, a disease where some of the organs melt. Even with painkillers, the pain did not go away, and all I could do was wait for the necrosis to stop. For three months, I couldn't eat and only received IV fluids. I lost nearly 35 kg, and my legs and arms were almost just bones."
The inflammation levels were also serious. He said, "A normal level is usually 0.5, but mine rose to 36. No matter how many antibiotics I was given, the levels did not go down," adding, "I only learned after I was discharged that the doctor told my wife, 'This week is the critical point; you could die from sepsis.'"
However, there was a miracle. Song Pil-geun said, "After about three months, the necrosis stopped. I underwent surgery for five and a half hours to drain the fluid formed from the melting organs," adding, "The incision was 20 cm long, and there were eight holes drilled. I repeatedly rinsed with saline. For the first time after the surgery, my face started to regain color."
Song Pil-geun reported that it took a year to fully recover and expressed deep gratitude to his wife who was by his side. He said, "My wife told me, 'You're not going to die.' Even while she was with me in the hospital, she kept me from feeling depressed. I think I endured by believing those words."
Meanwhile, Song Pil-geun debuted as a comedian with the KBS 27th public recruitment in 2012, and in February 2023, he shared his recent situation while hospitalized for necrotizing pancreatitis, which drew sympathy.
