Korea's first transgender celebrity, Hari Soo, expressed anger over a fraudulent case in which someone impersonated a transgender person to extort a large sum of money.
On the 24th, in the MBC program 'True Story,' the family of a young man named Dohyun (pseudonym), who dreamed of transitioning, appealed that their son had been scammed by an unidentified transgender individual. The individual, who claimed to be a transgender person and a major player in the industry, promised Dohyun that they would invest 189 million won to help him undergo gender reassignment surgery.
And the broker, referred to as A, claimed to have booked a hospital in Thailand after receiving the money. According to Dohyun (pseudonym), they were said to be a celebrity well-known in the transgender industry. However, investigations revealed that the individual and the broker were the same person.
Dohyun trusted their words and even used illegal loans to transfer a large sum of money, but instead of surgery, he was left with only debt. Despite this, he cut off contact with his parents, who opposed his meeting with the individual, and ran away. His parents found themselves being threatened by loan sharks.
Eventually, Hari Soo joined the victim's family in revealing the true identity of the scammer. She stated that the individual was not well-known in the transgender community and said, "Anyone who helps me without a purpose is a scammer," working to ensure that Dohyun was not brainwashed.
In particular, she pressed the individual during a phone call. The individual lied to Hari Soo, claiming to be a transgender person, and quickly hung up the phone. However, the individual's family revealed that she was a daughter who had not undergone gender reassignment surgery and had no medical history.
Meanwhile, Hari Soo debuted in 2001 and has become a symbol of transgender celebrities. As a leader in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, she did not treat this matter lightly. Viewers who watched the broadcast applauded her determination and hope that Dohyun can break free from the scammer.
