Will actor Choi Woo-sik be able to showcase a new side of himself through the highly anticipated new drama 'Whale Star'?
According to OSEN's coverage on the 25th, Choi Woo-sik is positively considering participating after receiving the script for the new drama 'Whale Star'.
'Whale Star', based on the webtoon of the same name, is set during the Japanese colonial period and draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale 'The Little Mermaid'. Since the drama adaptation was decided shortly after, it has attracted significant attention as the original webtoon is a mega IP with numerous fans in Korea.
Earlier, comprehensive content studio Take One Studio announced its production lineup, and 'Whale Star' received the most attention.
Having received the President's Award at the 2021 Korea Content Awards for its anticipated drama adaptation, Naver Webtoon 'Whale Star' is currently in the final stages of scheduling and casting and is in active preparation for filming.
'Whale Star', inspired by 'The Little Mermaid', is a melodrama about Kang Yi-hyeon, a man who devoted everything to his country during the anti-colonial movement in the Japanese colonial period, and Sua, a woman who risks her life to protect him. Directed by Heo Jin-ho, known for being one of the top directors in historical dramas with works like 'Spring Days' and 'August's Christmas,' and the cinematography is handled by Choi Yoon-man, who is highly regarded for his work on 'My Ajusshi' and 'My Mister Mud'.
Choi Woo-sik is set to play the role of Kang Yi-hyeon, the protagonist who, after studying in Japan from a pro-Japanese family, witnesses the massacre of Koreans during the Kanto Earthquake and resolves to become an independence activist. He forms a special bond with Sua, a 17-year-old girl working as a maid for a pro-Japanese landowner during this chaotic era.
Meanwhile, Choi Woo-sik, who gained global popularity with director Bong Joon-ho's 'Parasite', is actively involved in the drama 'Our Beloved Summer', Netflix's 'The Killer: A Hero', and the variety show 'Seojin's House'. He showcased his talents in Netflix's 'Melo Movie' this year and is anticipating the upcoming release of SBS's new drama 'Would You Merry Me'.
