Comedian Lee Gook-joo was shocked by the reality of electricity bills in Japan.
On the 23rd, a video titled "The day I only ate one pack of Chapaghetti because I was not feeling well.. A dating vlog with the first man visiting Gook-joo's Tokyo home 'I don't understand gacha in Japan~' (spending 100,000 won..)" was uploaded to Lee Gook-joo's YouTube channel.
On that day, Lee Gook-joo's small apartment in Japan was visited by her younger brother, theater actor Lee Seon-kyu, and they spent time together. During that time, Lee Gook-joo had a meal with her younger brother's Japanese female friend, Kaede.
Lee Seon-kyu said, "Our mom helped back then. On the trip," and Lee Gook-joo expressed her gratitude, saying, "Thank you so much." She continued, "Since it's our first day meeting, I will naturally buy something delicious when I come to Korea next week."
He asked, "How many days will you be in Korea?" and Kaede answered, "About 2 weeks." Then Lee Gook-joo joked, "That's quite a long time, right? Let's do this. You can live at my house in Korea, and I'll live at your house in Japan. If it's like this, I don't think we need to pay rent."
She then asked, "Are the electricity and water bills expensive in Japan?" Kaede replied, "They are very expensive." Lee Gook-joo said, "I was shocked," and Kaede revealed, "In summer, the average electricity bill is 40,000 yen (about 380,000 won) per month," which was shocking.
Upon hearing this, Lee Gook-joo said, "No way.. I can't turn on the air conditioning," while reflecting on how she had continuously used the air conditioning so far.
He was surprised by Kaede's explanation, asking, "Isn't electricity and water managed by the country?" and Lee Seon-kyu also asked, "Is it run by private companies?" Kaede informed them, saying, "There are many companies."
Lee Gook-joo remarked, "Let's turn off the air conditioning, then," and turned to Lee Seon-kyu, saying, "Hey, if you hadn't been into gacha, you wouldn't be paying this much," to which Lee Seon-kyu humorously confessed, "I spent 40,000 won today by myself."
Meanwhile, Lee Gook-joo shared that she started living alone in a 9-pyeong studio apartment in Japan this past April. However, there have been criticisms about her luxurious living situation, such as buying expensive food or taking taxis. Lee Gook-joo emphasized, "I am not trying to challenge living alone in my 20s. I am in my 40s. I should be taking on challenges that are appropriate for my age; just eating at McDonald's suddenly will age me fast. I have a close friend here for 20 years, and there's no reason not to utilize her. Don't say, 'That woman can eat that because she has money.' I'm not 20 anymore."
