Actor Lee Won-jong revealed that he felt embarrassed as he recounted his actions on the day of the martial law declaration on Dec. 3.
Recently, a video titled "The reason actor Lee Won-jong hid the fact that he went to Yeouido on the day of the emergency martial law" was released on the KBS YouTube channel 'We Were There That Day'.
In the video, Lee Won-jong recounted his actions on the day of the emergency martial law declaration by former President Yoon Suk-yeol on December 3rd of last year. After finishing the shoot, Lee Won-jong returned home and while watching YouTube, he learned about the martial law declaration through a live broadcast by writer Lee Dong-hyung and initially found it hard to believe. He said he only realized it was true after checking foreign news outlets like CNN and BBC, and he was greatly shocked.
Lee Won-jong noted that he heard the plea to come to the National Assembly through the live broadcast of Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, and informed his family. However, his wife discouraged him, saying it was dangerous, so he couldn't go out immediately. After confirming that his daughters, who had not yet returned home after the martial law had been declared, had returned safely, he headed to Yeouido alone in the early morning after ensuring that his family was asleep.
Lee Won-jong, who arrived in front of the KBS headquarters by taxi, confessed that he couldn't approach near the National Assembly building. He felt a great fear at the fact that soldiers had been mobilized and admitted that he could not act actively, saying, "I felt deep embarrassment." Additionally, Lee Won-jong expressed his determination to "leave a record and if there is a chance to make amends, I will strive to live on," even if it is an embarrassing memory, fearing that his recollections may become distorted over time.
Finally, Lee Won-jong conveyed his gratitude for those citizens who stood up against the martial law situation on Dec. 3 by gathering at the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, Lee Won-jong has raised his political voice in contexts like the impeachment situation following the martial law. He attended rallies urging the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, stating, "Hey, aren't you embarrassed? Just step down. Oh, everyone is struggling. The country offers free meals; I wish you would just stay there. Please stop. It's disgusting," and added, "There are still those who commanded gunfire upon the members of the National Assembly elected by the people. We must remember this to the end and find and punish them."
