A man in his 20s has received a fine for illegally entering the residence of the group NewJeans and stealing items.
On the 23rd, the Seoul Western District Court's Criminal Division 9 (Judge Kim Min-jung) sentenced Mr. A to a fine of 10 million won for charges including breaking and entering and theft.
Mr. A illegally entered the residence of NewJeans located in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on December 18 last year, and after confirming that the door was open, reentered three days later on December 21.
Upon entering the residence, Mr. A stole hangers and banners and uploaded videos of the residence online. At the time, the residence was empty, as NewJeans had vacated after declaring the end of their contract with ADOR.
During the preliminary hearing, Mr. A's lawyer acknowledged all charges, stating, "He deserves to be criticized. However, he is reflecting on his actions and has actively cooperated with the investigation," and requested leniency, noting, "Considering the defendant's usual conduct, the risk of reoffending is low. He believed that taking the hangers and banners after NewJeans moved out would not constitute theft."
Mr. A also took out a prepared note and read, "I made a mistake due to hasty judgment. I am sorry for hurting the artist and the agency I was supporting," adding, "Please give me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of being a civil servant. I will take care of my ill mother and live well," showing tears.
During the hearing, the prosecution sought a 10-month prison sentence for Mr. A.
The court explained the sentencing reasons, stating, "Because the location of the breaking and entering was a residence where the celebrity no longer lived at the time, the risk of directly infringing on personal privacy is relatively low, and the monetary damage is minor. Considering that Mr. A is a first-time offender, we have taken these factors into account. "
